Here's the jist of the article

1. Download the official Disneyland mobile app

First things first. The Disneyland app* allows you to navigate that land and even utilize the mobile ordering feature at select dining locations when you are in the land. Be sure to download before you go!

2. Plan around your attraction experience

Starting Jan. 17 as needed, a virtual queue for Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance may be implemented to help deliver the best possible guest experience, allowing guests to explore other areas of the park while waiting for their turn to ride. The Disneyland app will have a dedicated module, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance – Access by Boarding Group, available from the main page. Here’s how it will work:

  • Request to join a boarding group to ride the attraction, once you have entered Disneyland park. The virtual queue will not be available until published park opening hours.
  • Boarding groups will be sent a push notification when it is their turn to enter the attraction queue and you can monitor status of boarding groups from the app.
  • There also will be the ability to join a boarding group from select locations inside Disneyland park, if you are not using the app. The boarding group is tied to admission that will be scanned upon entry of the attraction.
  • Signage throughout the park will also display boarding group status.
  • Admission into Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance will be subject to capacity, and having an assigned boarding group will not guarantee entrance to the attraction.
The park opens at 8am😬😬 That’s crazy. BG’s are going to be booked in .10 seconds. And then EMH’s on Saturday. Yikes 😱

Seems pretty darn similar to what is going on now at DHS - only thing I notice is it doesn't mention any concept of "Back-up" BGs, just that "having an assigned boarding group will not guarantee entrance to the attraction" - so almost like all BGs there are Back-up BGs

If you click on the link for virtual queues in that blog post there are additional details and they mention the backup BGs.

I noticed that there is no mention of any compensation for your BG not getting called. Was there any official word on getting FPs and/or a park ticket for DHS in the communication for WDW? The wording at DL seems like you get nothing if your (non-backup) BG doesn’t get called.

No. We didn't even get any notice on what the system would be at opening.
People just showed up very early the morning on December 5th and were greeted with information about the bg.

So there is no “official” word on what happens if your BG isn’t called?

Rides still amazing. So worth the trouble even after all that happened

My suggestion as well.

Definitely email and enjoy the rest of your park time without having to give more of it up for ROTR related things.

Eh I had to drop my BB8 balloon off for my time in AK so I decided to do it while it was still fresh. Got another recovery FP out of it for the AK rides. (for the record that was not an incentive for the stop just a bonus). Glad I knew about this thread so I could make a few points about knowing how they normally handle BGs that aren’t backup and don’t get to ride.

Skimmed the last 40 pages or so and didn't see this addressed. Anyone get a boarding time then head to Pandora? DHS opens at 7 when I'm there next Saturday (MLK weekend) and AK has morning EMH at 8, anyone think I could get a BG right at 7 then Uber/Lyft to AK for EMH and have a "reasonable" (less than 90 min) wait for Pandora, with time to get back to DHS for my BG? It's a last minute trip for my daughter's birthday and of course those are the only two rides she wants to go on. I could do Pandora at park closing as a backup but looking for thoughts on this first.

Yes it's doable. Good luck

Ok - made a few changes to "The Chart"...
  • Added "First BG called" - taken from comments throughout this thread
  • Changed previous column to "Last BG called"
  • Added "Total BGs accommodated" - calculation of last minus first.
  • Added "Park Close" - regular park closing time (not accounting for EMHs)
  • Added "Operating Hours" - total # of hours park was open that day (not including EMHs)
  • Added "BGs per hour" - calculated as Total BGs accommodated divided by Operating hours.
  • I added some shading to the fields that are probably of most interest.
  • I also hid all dates up to Wednesday 12/18 when the current process rolled out. Any data prior to that was pretty much invalid and only hanging around for sentimental reasons.
This should make it easier to take the data presented and use it when thinking about your trip and your operating hours. I welcome any further suggestions but I can't say I'm gonna put another 2 hours of work into this to add more 🤣 😜

So here we are...day 3. Got through the 10K by 6:45 and thought, what the heck, can't hurt to cruise over to DHS and grab a back up BG and see what happens. Got 111 at 7:15, and now in line sooner than the last 2 days where I had guaranteed BGs, go figure. Very curious if they fixed the part that was broken last night. Last ROTR ride of the weekend!

I have a really dumb question to ask and have read every page of this thread since it's started, following daily for two weeks now - but still have missed this.

Why is the first BG called a later number? Do they not start assigning groups at #1? (running away shaking and certain that this is horribly obvious but literally can't figure it out.)

They do not start assigning at 1, every day is different. They have used 1 only 2 days and then it's been all over the place

When does Slinky Dog Dash start operating on days when the park opens at 7 (and they let people through the turnstiles at 6:20)? Is there time to ride slinky dog dash and get off (to reserve a boarding group at exactly 7am)?

Nothing in the park is open until after 7am. You will grab a BG first and then join the masses in your escorted walk to the SDD entrance. Depending on how early you arrive will determine how close to the front of those masses you are.

No, the attractions start operating at the same time as official park time opening

Rides dont open till 7am, so all you can do till then is stand around or buy a coffee from one of the few snack areas that are open.

Keep checking the times as they might change. But i would say, yes, later opening means more people

I'm not as sure. I think your right but its interesting. I think right now a lot of people are able to do BG setup at DHS and still have time to then go rope drop another park. IF they go back to normal opening times, yes there will likely be more people as it is a more reasonable time to wake up while on vacation, but rope droppers/park hoppers that have plans at other parks will be a lot less likely to hit DHS first.
