? re travelling with kids without DH

Hi,
I will be travelling to the USA with my children and sister to go on a 4 day cruise sailing out of Miami. I just wondered if I need a letter of consent from my DH since I'm travelling with the children without him. We are married, NOT divorced; it's just that he can't get the time off of work and we're already going on a Disney cruise in Oct.

If I do need a letter, does it have to be notarized, and if so, how long does this usually take? I just want to make sure I leave enough time to have this done if required.

And is there a time limit as to how far in advance the letter of consent can be prepared? If my DH signed the letter today, is there any chance that it would be rejected in August because it was signed 3 months ago?

If anyone can help me out re this subject, I'd really appreciate it! Thanks!

I always travel without my dh and have always had a letter drawn up by a lawyer giving me permission to take my ds out of the country. I've only ever been asked for this letter once but I get it each time just in case. I've never seen anything specific regarding guidelines/rules.

Thanks for replying, Tracey! I agree that it's better to be prepared and not run the risk of encountering difficulties when I'm leaving or entering Canada. I appreciate your feedback since you've actually travelled with your child without your hubby! Thanks very much!

I take a letter (not notorized) just signed by DH. I've never had a problem(never even been asked for letter) and travel frequently to the USA and Canada without DH and with my DD and DS.(5&7).

Have him sign it the night before you leave, looks better I think.

When I went to Mexico On a High School trip I was underage so i had to get a letter signed and notorized from both my parents. I would say call the cruise line and make sure. Notarizing takes no time at all you can get it done at Banks and at places like Mail Boxes Etc. Both parties must be present and sign then and there and then the Notary stamps and signs it. You can do it in advance just make sure the letter states your travel dates and places you are going. I am no expert but that it what I had to get done several years ago so just from experience. Anyway I say better safe than sorry get it done just in case, with everything going on in the world today you never know what rules are going to change when.

Just an FYI, here in Canada you used to be able to go to a Bank Manager, etc., but in this case your best bet is to get your lawyer to do it!
