Random WDW Info - I Never Knew!

It's been that way from the start. Many of the so-called "facts" posted in the first 20 pages are actually rumors, urban myths, or flat-out falsities. But I never saw this thread at the beginning, and posting corrections to posts made three years ago seems pointless.

This kind of thread is still a lot of fun, despite the inaccuracies.

If this were a rumor thread it would get moved to the rumor board, which gets far FAR fewer visits. Its a good thread; part fact, part rumor, keeps the brain thinking! And the fact that it "qualifies" on this board keeps it alive. So thats good too!:thumbsup2
Some of the best threads get moved to the smaller boards and die from lack of viewing. Its a good thing when the thread can stay in the bigger rooms. It stays alive longer. JMHO

Here's one I noticed on my recent trip that I haven't seen in the thread yet. When you are leaving the railroad at the Frontierland station, there's a Rabbit Tales "newspaper" poster that's posted near the station which is basically an ad for Splash Mountain (the headline reads "Guests plunge 52 feet - wind up in briar patch".) If you take the time to actually read through it (or do as I did and take a picture of the poster and read lt later on) you'll find that it has a whole entire article with the story behind Splash Mountain, how it came to be, the whole Br'er Rabbit story told on the ride, and even an explanation of how it the place came to be "invaded" by humans riding down the falls in hollowed out logs. It's one of those things most people would never bother taking the time to read, but someone went through and put the whole thing in there anyway.

Thats so cool

Any chance we can see the picture you took?:boat:

The car isn't on the track when it flips. It flips during the Yeti scene (right before you go over the big drop).

Actually there are two sections where the track flips: where you said and also when you get to the broken tracks (the part behind you at that time):thumbsup2 I can verify this is 100% true as I saw it during a backstage tour :) If you're really quiet, you can hear it turn and lock into place. I always hold my breath because the chicken in me is afraid it won't flip.. but it always does!

I have enjoyed this thread so much.
Here's one for ya.
The CMs are all trained to use 2 fingers when pointing--as in giving directions-so as not to offend anyone because in some cultures it is rude to point with one finger.

I'm curious as to what culture this is? When I took traditions we were told it was for a different reason... so that when a CM points it doesn't look like they are pointing at anyone in particular, but rather a direction. Otherwise guests might think the CM is talking about them. I have heard the "cultures" rumor but no one ever knows exactly what culture it is:confused3

i am always interested in finding out all of the little things that are special to wdw. some of these items are not noticed unless someone brings it out, then it is so much fun to look for them. thanks for any info.:goodvibes

have any of you seen the little mouse that sits in a hole in one of the log beams in the vwl lobby. if you sit in the chairs in front of the fireplace and look up you will be able to find the log with the hole in it and the little mouse. that hidden mickey is one of my favorites.:thumbsup2

1) The Rose and Crown sells more Gunness annually than any other establishment in the world (not just Disneyworld, the entire world).

A few weeks ago I asked one of the bartender's in the UK if this was a true statistic. He claimed at one point, the Rose & Crown sold the most Guinness PER SQ. FOOT - but he said that only lasted one year and that was one of the first years of Epcot & The UK pavilion (back in the early to mid-80's). Obviously, cast members have been known to be wrong, so take it for what it's worth..

LOL! When DS took the Traditions course, the "Disney two-fingered point" wasn't even mentioned (this was at DL). But he said it was funny that that two-fingered point just came naturally as soon as he started work.
I recently asked a member of the dream squad, "How do you get to do what you do?" He said that you have to already have worked for Disney for at least a year, and so many CMs applied for the position that you can't be a member of the Dream Squad for more than 6 months, so that other CMs can get a chance at the job. I thought that was kind of interesting. And they spend so much time and effort making dreams come true for other people, her smile and enthusiasm suggested that I'd made her dream come true by giving her the opportunity to talk about her job.

Near the door, on each side there is a ruby tile, and in the same spot on the other side there is an emerald tile for the birthstones of the father and daughter.

Wow! That's so cool! How do I get a job like that?!? Thanks for the info.

My piece of trivia (not sure if it's somewhere back on page 34 or something) is that in the train station in Frontierland, you can see up a shelf a wooden leg with the word "smith" on it. This is a reference to the joke from Mary Poppins (in the tea on the ceiling scene): "I once knew a man with a wooden leg named Smith..." "Well, what was the name of his other leg?!"

here is something interesting about the castles, i read this a while ago so please fill in my missing information! as an art history and architecture afficionado, this particularly interested me:

many people know that sleeping beauty's castle in california is based off of a famous german castle (fill in here if you remember the name of it). but cinderella's castle in florida is actually a castle that would never have existed during any architectural styles - it is a combination of several styles, progressing as you look from bottom to top. the bottom is the most solid, like a romanesque fortress. as you progress upwards, the towers and decorations become more and more light and decorative, so you have high gothic flying buttresses. at the top of the towers they are the most lacey and airy looking. i do not remember exactly but this might be in a renaissance or baroque style.

sleeping beauty castle in paris has the most interesting story. obviously, it looks very different from its sleeping beauty sister castle in california which was based on a real building. the castle in paris is purely fantasy, and not based upon any architectural style other than storybook illustrations (and of course walt disney's animation). this is because the imagineers wanted to give a european audience something different to draw them - they already have (the original!) real castles available. so instead of making a copy and competing with real european architecutre, they went in the opposite direction and created something purely whimsical and fantastical.

There problem was that france has the real sleeping beauty castle Usse castel in the Loire in france. This is where the story was both wrtten and based. They wanted to capture some of that in the castle in park. I have been to Usse and it is beautiful but to me nothing like the one in the paris park

it looks like we are branching out into other disney locations not just wdw. thats good. :thumbsup2 does anyone know if disney china and japan have cinderella castles also? if so what are they like?

It would be the Boardwalk for my family. We've stayed there probably 4 ( 5th time on our next trip  ) out of the 11 trips we've made so far. It's our favorite resort. :yay:

Hey I am staying at the villas this Aug. Do you mind Pming me why your family loves the resort so much? I would love to know!! :):cool1:

Tokyo Disneyland has Cinderella Castle, just like the one at WDW. Hong Kong Disneyland has Sleeping Beauty Castle, just like the one at Disneyland. :)

Ive read this whole thread and I havent seen this one! I'm not sure i it really happens or not but I read that closer to closing time at MK (maybe other parks?) that they hand a balloon to the last person in line to show that thats the last person.

And that the red neck tags CMs hand you before you get into line is actually a way to update wait times. :)
