What do you put in the cavity while cooking your turkey? My mom used to do an onion or an apple. This year I tried a lemon. When asking friends, everyone does something different.

What do you put inside the turkey while it is cooking?

I rubbed the turkey with olive oil, sprinkled it with a little kosher salt, pepper, garlic salt and a bit of Bells.

Do you think the lemon will turn out ok? Anyone tried it?

This was the first year I didn't stuff a turkey. I'm pretty old school and you always stuff a turkey. This year, I didn't - made the stuffing on the side - and inside the cavity, I did whole packages of Sage, Thyme and a sliced lemon (followed a food network recipe). It was ok. I didn't get an overwhelming urge to always and forever do it this way.

I bring the ham, but my DM puts in onions and celery.....maybe a few carrots too...

This year, on a whim, I threw in celery and chopped onion that I sprinkled with garlic powder, sea salt, pepper and poultry seasoning. I rub the outside with butter salt and pepper and more butter. I was going to roast it upside down like someone on the Dis mentioned but chickened out (or maybe I turkey-ed out...:lmao:)

So far it smells delicious!:thumbsup2

but I also add a few sprigs of fresh rosemary and sage..I have an herb garden so may as well take advantage of it!

Never heard of the cooking the turkey upside down thing..I always use a Reynolds oven bag..we have a turkey fryer, still new in the box..but haven't had the courage to try it yet..lol

I have tried the citrus route in the past..it was just 'okay'. The year I tried that..I used slices of lemon and orange..then I mixed some of the juice in some softened butter and spread that under the skin of the turkey..not something I would do every year, but it was a change

Good luck with your turkeys, everyone..and HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO MY DIS FAMILY!
Lynn

I usually put a few oranges or clemintines in there. They are tossed when the bird is done! :thumbsup2

I have never put anything inside the cavity except some salt, pepper, and paprika.
Down here we do dressing and not stuffing.

My Dh smoked a turkey also and he did put some fruits inside the cavity but the roasted turkey gets nothing. I cook it in a Nesco Roaster and have had wonderful turkey for years.

I do lemons in chicken and it is wonderful! this year I stuffed a bunch of fresh herbs in the cavity.

We really like stuffing- so here it's always stuffing. Alton Brown said to put a chopped apple, cinnamon stick and some other stuff in the turkey, I bet that smells GREAT when roasting!:goodvibes

Yep! Dressing, not stuffing here, too. I just threw in some "stuff" to kick up the flavor and add to wonderful smell permeating my house right now.

I put onion and garlic inside and then garlic and onion on top. I also put bacon on the outside of the bird and that helps to keep it moist.

proving yet again everything is better with bacon!
