DH and I have Nextel phones and use them in case we get separated. I see a lot of families with the little 2 way radios but it seems that everyone is on the same frequency
We tried them many years ago and there was too much talk on them to be affective. And some of the things that were said were not very nice! (Not kid friendly if you know what I mean.... )
We just use our cell phones now, but like I said, that was years ago, maybe most people use cell phones now so there isn't so much talk on the family radios.
We use Verizon and had no trouble last year. Still saw a lot of the little radios and I can imagine that would be difficult with limited frequencies and a lot of people using them.
We've used both the radios and cell phones. I would recommend the cell phones. You can set them on vibrate/ring in case you don't hear the ring over the noise in the park. Coordinating frequencies on the radios is a pain and it always seems that you get someone who wants to talk all over your conversation. There's pretty good reception in all of the parks (we've used Sprint, Cingular and Nextel) except those of us on Sprint and Cingular have had the occasional reception problem in MGM. Just a hint though, in case of dead batteries or lest phones/radios, always have a plan B (meet at the tote board at the top of the hour, etc.)
