Racist,ignorant, or misunderstood? O'Reilly remarks

Even O'Reilly will admit that not all of his viewers agree with him.

I watch him regularly, and couldn't disagree with him more!

He just happens to stretch the truth so much I find it entertaining! :happytv:

Most people used to think slavery was ok, and that blacks should sit at the back of the bus, have their own drinking fountains...like they had some communicable disease. But that must have been true, since most people believed it....

Maybe those days are not as over as you think. It's not like they got to vote on the subject. We have all seen them calling for votes and "letting the people speak" when it comes to discrimination issues these days.

Which is the basis of the Republican "southern strategy". It was all about race and how the Democrats were going to let those (insert offensive "N" word) marry your women, eat at your lunch counters, use your water fountains, swim in your pools, etc. Why do you think scum like George Wallace and Strom Thurmond switched parties?

Thank you for proving so succinctly with such a vivid example that O'Reilly truly does have the audience he deserves.

The viewers who dont look for sugar-coated, left-slanted news and opinions? Yeah - then youre right. :thumbsup2

Me too.

It's also interesting how the people who are supposedly "defending" O'Reilly are being treated. Sadly typical.

This I will never understand. Seems every O'Reilly viewer here is deemed a racist. Lovely!!! :goodvibes

But the problem is, at least with the topic at hand, many people don't believe what he said was racist, bigoted or ignorant.

.

But you HAVE to or you are one yourself!!!! Understand now?

What is your Point? What is your argument here? Are O'Reilly Viewers like that? Please expand. Are O'Reilly viewers thinking like that now?

Ok, this is how I follow it:

Theory One:

Bill is honestly blown away by the fact that Sylvia's patrons can eat like civilized humans. He shares this shocking information with his viewers. Therefore, both are racist.

Theory Two:

Bill is not really blown away by the fact that Sylvia's patrons can eat like civilized humans, he already knows this. However, he shares this experience so his viewers will also know it. Therefore, Bill assumes his viewers are racists.

Either way, it doesn't make the viewers look all that hot...

As far as I know, nobody has deemed O'Reilly viewers as racists. Why do his defenders keep claiming to have been called racist?

I'll remember this post and use it the next time you guys pile on Michael Moore or the liberal du jour. It goes both ways, my friend.

Exactly. If you don't call MM terrible names like they do you are some kind of vile person or traitor.

Violently off topic, but does anyone know when Sicko is coming out on DVD? It was in and out of our theatre so fast I never got a chance to see it! (I live in a VERY Republican area)

Theory Three:

Neither? The conversation with Juan Williams didn't start out casually as "hey, guess what? When I was at Sylvia's last week...", it as a different context when the whole conversation is viewed but that didn't seem to register with the "Bill O'Reilly is an ignorant racist sexist pig..." crowd.

And of course when examples of people on "their side" making just as outrageous comments are mentioned, there's nary a peep. Hmm...

Sometimes it's chalked up to "well, he's a comedian, that's what he does. Tells JOKES!!" (I'm referring to Bill Mahr's "joke" earlier this year about the former Governor of New Jersey).

Pass the crying towel. :sad1:

Bill O'Reilly hit the Trifecta with his comments: They're racist, ignorant, and misunderstood ............... and they're misunderstood because they're racist and ignorant.

So far two have on this thread. Or at least put it out there with a ? on it. But the implication was clear.

So, what was he saying? If by "I couldn't get over the fact" he didn't mean he was surprised, what did he mean?

If he wasn't trying to tell his viewers something they didn't know - why was he talking about the fact that black people could act civilized in a restaurant?

PS - I keep reading folks saying he's being taken out of context and that he meant something different - but not what the alterative is.

Ok, then Bill, Sean and Rush are entertainers-just like Bill Mahr and Jon Stewart. I've thought that for a long time, actually. So, then nothing from any of their shows can be used to PROVE anything because they are simply in the entertainment business.

I didn't notice any posts with such clear implications. If people have made such implications and people are upset - why not quote the post and address it directly.

Real Theory,

Bill Discusses how Stupid it is to Sterotype African Americans. Discusses his Grandmother and what she is like. Relates his expierence at a Harlem Restuarant, One that he has been there many times. Tries to convey how that this opinion is wrong, by giving example of the restuarant. Using poor choice of words by Saying I am surprised, Maybe being sarcatic, I don't know. Does not think his audience thinks like this, but is generally speaking of some people. However, Taken out of context, looks like he speaking as a racist. People who don't like Bill O'Reilly jump on it making wild assumptions about him, his defenders, and audience.

Ah, now we at least have a theory that makes some sense. It's not tha the was taken out of context. It's not that his inflection didn't come through. It's that the words that came out of his mouth were "poor choice" and don't reflect what he meant to say. He said he was surprised, but he wasn't.

Does not think his audience thinks like this,
So, he spent an episode telling his audience something they already knew???

Even if he was "taken out of context" and since most of us who are commenting about it have seen the entire clip by now, then he must think his audience is racist if he had to explain to them that black people can and do eat like civilized people in restaruants.

If that's true, Bill's opinion of his audience is what they ought to be upset about.
