What an interesting set of races for this weekend! Buzzards, Dogs and Snowshoe Stomping! Go, Bill, Vic and Monica, GO!! A touch of history to finish off the weekend with a run honoring a signer of the Declaration of Independence. According to the press release, this is the "Granddaddy of all raod races" and marks the beginning of race season. Run well, Mike!!

GO TEAM!!!! :cheer2:

And Bill when I originally saw you were going to do the Buzzard Bait I was so intrigued by the name that I looked into the race and I have to say it sounds very well done. Bill will have to correct me on what actually comes out of the race tomorrow but from what I read they get a tech shirt and entry into the zoo. I love my Zoo run (though not sure we are doing it this year now due to training) but I get a cotton tee and no zoo entry. I was very impressed reading about the Buzzard and how kewl is that name! I have to change states! LOL Ok, it's really the warm weather I'm after but I'll still say it's for the Buzzard Bait race ;)

All the best wishes for excellent race weather and PRs for all. Have a great ol' time out there!!! :cheer2:

Diane...the Brevard Zoo is particularly cool. It was built by volunteers in the community. I spent 3 weekends there working on the boardwalks and a giant ant-hill type play area. (Bill and Lynnda...if it's still there, I did the chicken-wire for the window right next to the big tortoise).

Good luck to everyone this weekend!

Good Luck to everyone this weekend!!!!! I can not wait to hear how great everyone did!!

Well I set a new PR with the race today, but then again so did most everyone who ran since 3K races are far and few between. The race director made sure to point this out during the award ceremony as well. :rotfl:

The race was at the local zoo and was mainly done to help promote the new vulture exhibit that opened last weekend. It was put on by the local running store as part of their race series. This was the inaugural race and it had 480 people sign up. :scared1: It did have tech shirts and they are very cute. They are probably the best I have gotten from all the races and means I will have to look out for the other races in their series. The runners just had to show their bib and they were given entry into the zoo for the day. Since we have annual passes this didn't help us much but we saw several people in line to get into the zoo.

Mel, the boardwalks may never be the same with all the runners pounding on them. We will have to check out the tortoise area again but I think the chicken wire is still there.

Before the race, we were able to see a red tailed hawk and the signature vulture wandering around. The stores mascot, Zippy the Gecko, was also out.

The race was fairly quick but it started outside the zoo and went to a quick turnaround in their driveway. From here it wound around the back by the giraffe and rhino habitats. There were some sort of deer out watching us here. A little further down an ostrich was running with us but soon tired of chasing us. We ran about .8 miles and then we entered through the back of the zoo.

We ran along the main circle/hub and left through the Florida area. On the way out, we could see the alligators waiting to get any wayward runners. The deer weren't out at the time though. We left through the back of the zoo again and were greeted by a porcupine, pigeon, baby alligator and a huge python, all held by their handlers of course.

Then we were headed back towards the finish line along the same path we went into the zoo on. It is supposed to be 1.86 miles and I registered 1.9 but I forgot to turn the Garmin off immediately so it was pretty close. My official time was 16:02. I ended up 5th in my age group out of 17 which surprised me. I missed 4th by 1.5 seconds.:sad2: The overall winner of the race finished at 9:47 so I still have room for improvement. :rolleyes1

The medals for the winners were cute. They had ribbon stickers on stuffed vultures with plastic medals. If we had Billy run, he could have come in second in his age group and gotten one.

They did have a kids race afterwards that Billy ran in. He was quite determined that he run alone and didn't want to go with me. He did well and had a determined look on his face. He got a little bag of goodies afterwards and seemed to have fun.

They have already planned next years and it is called the Dino Dash. I am wondering how they are going to get a dinosaur there but I guess they have a year to figure it out. :lmao:

Bill

Great job Bill! :thumbsup2

Today was the Race With The Dogs 5K. The weather was gorgeous, low 70s and not a cloud in the sky. Been like this for days.

You could run, walk, or run or walk with your dog. My two chunky butts aren't race ready by any stretch of the imagination. :sad2: :rotfl:

Arrived at the Destin City Hall around 0900, checked in an got my bib and t-shirt. Nice long sleeved T (Even had my size). The rest of the Sheriff's Office team showed up, a couple with their pets.

There were around 200 people, and a good portion had their dogs with them.

The race had two start times. Runners without dogs first and then everyone else. The course was a flat, out and back through a fairly affluent part of town (If anyone's interested I did see a house for sale for 1.4 million dollars while on the course).

The horn sounded at 1000 and we were off. My first mile was 9:25 (haven't run a sub 10 minute mile in years), mile 2, 10:38, mile 3, 11:20, and .16, 11:14. Total time 32:32. I ran this 5K 20 seconds faster than the one I ran in January, but I wanted to run a sub 30 minute. Guess I have something to shoot for.

No problems encountered, and my 50 year old body responded well.

Didn't go to the awards ceremony, so I don't know if anyone on our team won awards.

All in all a fun race and something I'll do again next year. :)

Congrats WISH teamers!!!!!!!

Bill--Love the race report! Made me laugh--alligators out to get wayward runners!:lmao: Getting a dino for next year!:rotfl2: Great time--and a PR is a PR no matter how odd the distance!!!:thumbsup2

Vic--Wish I could run with my dog--she's not chubby--just ADD!:rotfl: Sounds like a nice day and a great run! Congrats on shaving those seconds off your time! Will ahve to pass on the house, though;)

Good Luck to all WISH competitors!

Bill and Vic: Nice job guys; congratulations! :thumbsup2

Steve

Hey Guys, great job on the races.

Vic - WTG on the sub-10 mile. I'm thinking there are many more in your future, especially if you quit house shopping on the course :) .

Bill - Sounds like a fun race. Maybe they'll add a couple meters next year so you can have a new PR on another new distance. Man, what a great idea!! A 3.14159 K, "The Pi Run" :lmao: . But then again, I guess it would have to be a perfect circle or something crazy like that.

Congrats again!

Thanks everyone!

Stephanie - ADD :rotfl: That's exactly what Dusty has. We'd spend more time socializing than running. Earnhardt on the other hand, he's too cool (or so he thinks) for running. ;)

Mike - I wonder if that Great Dane leaving a present on the front yard of that house helped or hurt the property value. :lmao:
