Quotation "marks" - How are they now "used?"

I use them all the time here and on my e-mail correspondence (but to a lesser degree). I use them for emphasis. I suppose I could use the bold feature or the italics feature, but they are too much trouble when I'm on a "roll."

I think they're used here on the boards as a form of emphasis. Rather than having to take your hands off they key board and reaching for that BOLD icon, people put in quotes b/c they can just type them in and not have to do any "extra work" (see -- I didn't have to use my mouse and stop my typing for that!). Know what I mean?

I have used the quotes, but have recently reverted to using the * for emphasis. Again, I'm lazy and want to get my thoughts down and don't want to lift my fingers from the keyboard to use the mouse until I'm done typing my post to finally go and post it.

I was unaware the DIS has an official language. I usually speak in English, but I mostly type in Manglish...it's very liberating

You see this kind of use more on bulletin boards than you do in standard writing. Since people here are basically having a "conversation," the quotes are used for emphasis that your tone of voice would imply if you were speaking.

This is why I use them so much, when I saw this post I thought I was the person the OP was refering to.

Its an internet BB. I type how I talk in RL. A mile a minute, with a breath every now and then! Sometimes I type so quickly I forget to use any punctuation and forget about going back to spell check!
