SWA just prompted me to Change my name to be in accordance with TSA's new rules about the names having to match.

On my Drivers Lic all I use is my Middle initial, but my Passport has my full middle name.

Can i list my full middle name on the ticket and just have an initial on my ID? Meaning more info on the ticket than on my Drivers lic

Or are they saying it has to match exactly?

I would use the version on the ID you're most likely to use for airplane access. If you travel mostly domestically, go with your DL. You can present both that and your passport for international travel. On the other hand, if you mostly travel outside the country, I'd use the name on your passport and just present that every time at the airport. It supersedes a driver's license, anyway :)

We have had our Delta tickets since before this change took place. When I called Delta and tried to add middle initials to the 4 tickets, they said it wasn't necessary.
Is this the case? Will I have troube with security in 2 weeks?
TIA

I would trust Delta. It's a roll-out process, throughout the Fall and possibly into early next year. Most likely it has already 'hit' Southwest for new ticket purchase (or they're being proactive). Your airline will let you know if/when your BP has to match your DL exactly. Worst case, you get your BP issued at the airport. There's no advantage/disadvantage to checking in online on Delta.

I would change it to match the DL if flying domestically. AirTran also captures the middle name/initial at booking but it doesn't print out on the boarding passes. So they are not comparing your boarding pass to your DL yet, at least not on AirTran.

It shouldn't be a problem, before I bought my tickets on Delta for my trip in two weeks I emailed them because I couldn't enter my middle initial and the response I received was basically not to worry about it. Apparently while these are new TSA rules they can't compel the airlines to follow them :confused3

I have the same issue. My license has my middle initial A, my passport my full middle name Ann. I'm just using A since I don't have any international travel planned. If I do have to fly international, I will change it before booking it.

I can't find anything on the TSA website about this. Can someone point me to the information?

DH and I have flights booked for December and didn't use our middle initials, which are on our DLs, when we purchased the tickets.

Thanks.

DebbieB: Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I'd been reading the section of the TSA website under the "For Travelers" tab, and referring to the "ID Requirements for Airport Checkpoints."

BTW, I was just on the JetBlue website. In the area where you enter the travelers' names, there are spaces for first and last name only. No provision for middle name or initial.

I only found it by searching "secure flight program" through google.

All of the airlines have not updated their websites to get all the information yet.

Most airlines are sending out an email to customers who have booked a flight to update their records. Most of their websites did not allow for the Middle name yet. I am adding my full Middle name, as I intend on updating my Driver's license to match my passport. I am going to take my Passport card with me just in case there is an issue with my DL only having the initial on it. I think that every thing has to be in place by the time the Secure ID requirements that must be in place in 2016.

I had contacted US Airways about this as well. My DL includes my full middle name and DH's includes his middle initial. Our ressies do not list any middle names. US Air emailed me back and said it would not be an issue.

Okay, so Southwest emailed me to update my name and I did so. What happens to the other people that I purchased tickets for hubby, daughters (who obviously won't have an id), mom and dad? Do I need to get those changed are should it be okay?

What a pain, on my DL I have my last name hyphenated with my maiden name-married name. But I always travel under just my married name, usually because I get perks through dh, the frequent traveller. I wonder if I can book under both names but instead of a hyphen just leave a space. That way my last name will look like my dh's. Is the TSA going to be punctuation crazy too???

How does this work for children, who do not have ID? Is this only required for adults?

My assumption/understanding was that the email was only sent to Rapid Rewards members so that you'd only have to enter the information once there and not have to give it every time you book a ticket. If you don't have a Rapid Rewards account, you'll have to provide the information every time you book a ticket in going forward (not tickets already purchased).

The 3 of us are all RR members, but only my son received the email. I logged into all of our accounts and they already had the information for my husband and me and nothing for my son. I'm assuming that they only sent out the emails to RR members missing this information.

He's 6, but does have a passport. I put his full first, middle, last names because (besides the fact that he has a passport with that full information) I'm assuming that by the time he's old enough to need identification to fly, full names will probably be standard on all IDs.

Exact same situation here. DL has initial, passport has name. I went with initial on the SWA site - I had a big logical diagram in my head about why that made sense at the time, but it doesn't make enough sense to type it out. ;)

The link that SW snt me didn't work properly, and I spent 45 minutes on the phone with them yesterday trying to add my middle initial!! What a nightmare!! I've got several upcoming flights between now and end of the year, and when I asked they told me it's not mandatory at this point and those tickets do not need to be changed.

And like a lot of others, my DL has my maiden name initial, while my passport has my full middle name. I went with DL for now.

Just FYI, you don't have to use the link. Just go to www.rapidrewards.com, log into your Rapid Rewards account and then click on "Account Details" over on the lefthand side of the screen (orange heading lines.) You can fix it there.
