Questions for cruising out of Galveston and port adventures for Progreso

If you’ve never been to Galveston, you’ll be discovering a new (but old, quaint, charming) place. It’s definitely not the big city of Houston (4th largest city in the US) - which will require driving to anything.

Is there something particular you want to see in Houston? NASA, perhaps? Visit an oncologist? Find someplace related to oil refining? See the home of a collapsed corporation (Enron)? A pro sports event? That’s what comes to my mind when I think Houston. I’ve been there to visit a friend - and we left town for San Antonio!

It really is dependent in what you like to do with your time. Galveston could be boring. But so could Houston.

I’d rather be in a beach town pre-cruise. Sort of set the mood.

The Johnson Space Center in Houston is indeed a fun place to visit, and we’ve been there several times.
But, I love anything that has to do with flight, including an open c ockpit gyroplane…!!!!!!! 🤪 🤣

thanks for that. I'm looking at February. How is the weather? We are from Massachusetts so I don't mind just a nice beach to get out of the winter!

I cruised to Cozumel (yes, a bit farther South) on a Super Bowl weekend. It was definitely not Winter (or Spring); probably a humidity factor. I went to a beach without any outerwear.

Think Summer for you. Should be a nice Winter Break.

We were there in March and the temperature in Progresso was 99 degrees F that day. There is a free shuttle into Progresso and you can walk to the beach from the drop off point.
wowza. We are sailing in March 2025 out of Galveston to Progresso, will definitely keep those temps in mind :rotfl2:

This video gives some clear info about the Houston airports, rental cars, parking, hotels and restaurants in Galveston, and the cruise terminals. Disney uses Pier 28, sharing with Royal Caribbean’s smaller ships.

Here are some screen grabs showing the Cruise Terminal:

Hi,
We're booked for the cruise from Galveston Feb 7-12 to Progreso and Cozumel. It's our first cruise ever.
We are Canadian but we spend winters in Merida. You might want to visit Merida. It's a Spanish Colonial city. There is a great expedia video. It's a 40 minute drive from Progreso. It's safe, (2nd safest city in North America). Lots of great restaurants and a nice city to walk around. It's authentic Mexico, not like Cancun. I love Uxmal, I take visitors there all the time. If you want to see ruins I would say that would be a good experience because it is less crowded. Tip there is a chocolate museum across the street from Uxmal, they sell chocolate slushies and great chocolate. You don't have to pay to go in if you just want to buy something.

Thanks so much for your mini review of Merida. We're heading back in a month on the same cruise and doing the art tour of Merida. Very excited!

Thank you for this! We were booked on an excursion to Merida from our cruise on the Magic last year but couldn't go because I banged up my knee and spent the day on the ship. Your mini review makes me want to book a cruise back to Progreso!
