Hello everyone!
I have always been a Canon girl- after losing 2 to the dreaded E18 error. I was scared to buy another!
My husband bought me a Digital Rebel ( Not sure of the model but it was purchased last Oct)
My question is what accessories MUST I have? I am learning how to use it slowly and carefully ( although I have always been a camera fanatic)
So I just wondered from all of you- I mean aside for the basics ( bag, strap, card, lens protector, cleaning kit, batteries)
Is there a flash, lens, remote, tripod that I should have?

THANKS SO MUCH!

it all depends on what type of photography you do,

if you give us more info I'm sure you'll get some great answers

I am not sure how to answer this question excatly.... its a hobby... i photograph EVERYTHING, i am a scrapbooker!!!
Mostly every day stuff, vacations, pets, nieces and nephew, DISNEY, fireworks, etc.
What exactly should I be telling you!?!?!

Are there certain types of pictures that don't come out as well as you would like? Kids sports, fireworks, indoor/low light, landscapes, macro, etc, etc? If your camera does everything that you want it to do, then you don't need anything else.

Instead of getting an accessory and trying to find a way to use it, get an accessory that fills a need you currently have. This hobby can get way too expensive if you don't.

for example.. nieces and nephew, if you are just photographing them around the house a 50mm 1.7 would be great, if they play sports and you want photos of them inthe middle of a soccer field, then a good telephoto or zoom would be useful such as a 75-300.. if the nieces dance, then a 50mm 1.7 or a 80-200 2.8 lens would be great, so lens choices would be based on specific types of shooting, if you want a lens that will cover most focal lengths, but have some tradeoffs in quality, sigma has a 28-300 lens..

as for flash, if you only ever take outdoor daylight photos, an external flash isn't as important as it would be if you shoot a lot of night or indoor stuff..

Well my husband is also a musician and I photograph a lot of his band playing and usually the venues are dark.
I would also like to be able to take better outdoor night shots.
And I would also like to be able to zoom a little more. Then I would like to be able to get great shots at WDW in Dec- fireworks,shows,etc....

Spending the money is well worth it to me especially if it means better pics

Well based on those requirements my suggestion would be to look into a 2 lens combo

A 24-70 f/2.8 and a 70-200 f/2.8 The canon versions will set you back a fair penny, but there are 3rd party options that are much more affordable. This will give you fast zooms from 24 to 200.

Hey Melissa,

Congrats on the new camera.

I'd look at the 50mm lenses. The 1.8 is dirt cheap, and the 1.4 not a bad buy at all. Having a fast lense like this in dark venues might help capture some fine images of your husband and his band.

I've also found that zoom isn't as important as we might think. Physically moving is quite frequently a good solution. Also, given the size of the images you can capture you can sometimes achieve the same view with a little cropping.
