I have a Disability that requires I use a scooter. Do you?
I think it is discourteous to sit myself at a table while folks with trays full of hot food search for an availabile table

As a matter of fact I do have to use a scooter and I have to use a cane for short distances. Even then, if I saw someone in need I would give up my seat. We obviously have different ideas of what it means to be courteous.

I don't understand what the big deal is. It is one thing if you sit at a table and you are not going to eat at the restaurant. However if you have ordered food and then sit down while you are waiting for food I don't think that is discourteous at all. My entire life this has been what everyone I know does. If the place is crowded one or more members of our party gets a table while the rest order food. I am in my 50's and this is what my parents did also. I never was angry at anyone who was saving a table while waiting for food. What is actually discourteous is finishing your meal when a place is crowded and then lingering chatting and not leaving. Those are the people who make me angry. If I am carrying a tray of food it is more important people done eating leave than that person who is waiting for food gets up and has to wait for someone else to leave. It is actually ridiculous to expect that. That is my opinion. Just like it is your opinion this is discourteous.

BTW, when we ate at Satuli Canteen we ordered our food and my DH was walking with a cane so he went and got a table while we ordered and waited for the food. He did have to walk through the order line to get to the dining room because they wouldn't let him just go into the dining room. After that no one stopped him at all or asked him why he was sitting with no food at a table. So I don't know what Disney policy is on sitting down without food because it seems inconsistent. It also seems kind of silly to not allow someone to sit down without a tray since not everyone in your party needs to carry the tray to the table. It has also been my experience they don't really follow their own policies half the time anyway.

When it is busy the CM's will not let you save a table. They steer the family to order and then they can sit after they have food.
I think that this happens in the CS restaurants that do nto have enough seating for the number of people coming through. Pecos Bill does this on occasion.

Yes. We have seen this at Satuli' Canteen, Pinocchio, Cosmic Rays, Columbia Harbor, Pecos Bills ....

OP, I would go to a restaurant and see how what the seating situation is like. I had put in my order for Backlot, arrived to not see one table inside available (July was necessary for us) so we ended up canceling our order and going elsewhere.

If it wasn't "discourteous", Disney would let you do it. They don't. That will tell you what they think about it. That's not to say that people don't do it and get away with it but I agree, it's discourteous.

I have always found a table before ordering so that I know where I'm heading with my tray of food in an overcrowded restaraunt. Not once, over many, many trips, have I been stopped. As long as I am spending $$$ , disney doesn't care

And normally, this is the case, however in several counter service restaurants, during busy seasons, CM's have kept people from seating themselves until after they have their food. I recognize that you have not experienced this, nor have i, however it does occur even if some of us have not been in the middle of it.

Exactly. The only reason I can see CM's not letting you sit down without food is if the restaurant is so crowded that there are people waiting with food in their hands to sit down. Then they would let them sit down before you. That makes sense. I just remembered we also did this at Columbia Harbor House and it was crowded. This was before mobile ordering. We sent my DD and her friend to find a table. My DH and I ordered and I waited for the food. My DH went to find the table then he sent my DD back to help me carry the trays. It took a while for us to get our food so they were sitting there like 10 mins before we came with the food. This happens in every busy counter service restaurant I have ever eaten at. It is the people who don't get up after they are done that make me mad. They are the ones that are discourteous IMHO.

That's one thing but it certainly isn't "discourteous" to sit at a table if need be.

I actually have not shared my opinion on this, so I find it a little odd you chose me to quote. I shared what is a practice in busy Disney restaurant, and kept my own thoughts to myself. I am not fond of the shoot the messenger mentality.

- A mom with a little one in tow and another in a stroller sitting at a table while dad gets in line for food.
- A large group where most find a table and a someone gets in line for food.
- Someone in a ECV waits at a table because they can’t stand in line while someone else gets in line for food.
- Et-bleepin’-cetera

Happyinwonerland’s “Pro Tip” is absolutely no different than any of the above scenarios; all of which are legitimate reasons for someone sitting at a table while someone else gets in line for food.

You just described 3 situations where people have problems, and solve them by creating problems for others. All I hear is "I'm going to think only of myself, and to heck with everyone else".

All these examples are just as discourteous as the original. Taking up a table for 10 or 15 minutes while waiting on your food, while others who already have their food are searching for a table...is simply rude. Another table of folks could eat and be gone in the time it takes for you to get your food.

You're a paying customer? Oh, I didn't realize everyone else there was eating for free. I need to get in on these free Disney meals sometime.

Tootsies hurting? I'll bet Joe Family who has their food and can't find a place to sit to eat it while it's hot has aching feet too. Everyone at Disney's feet are hurting.

Maybe these restaurants wouldn't back up so bad if people didn't sit around taking up tables without having their food.

I didn't mean to imply you thought it was discourteous. I was merely was merely pointing out that while there may be situations where CM may restrict people sitting at tables that doesn't affect my point that it is not discourteous. Although, it wasn't directed at you. Your post was just convenient.

Sorry about that.

No worries.

Sitting while someone else gets food is a hot topic. People w hot food in hand should always trump people without food waiting. Regardless of your party makeup.

If people only sat when they had food in hand there would be less circling.

Personally sitting a few minutes after eating is less heinous than sitting the same amount of time without food

Many people bring in their food from outside.

Those may be your opinions, but I intend to continue as I do, no shame in my table game. Personally, I have never even paid attention to whether or not someone had food while sitting. Some things are just not worth getting upset about.

Respectfully, I have to disagree. Simply changing the order in which people sit at a table will have little to no effect on the number of people circling for seats. Whether it's someone who just came in or someone who has their tray, that seat is going to be taken. If it's the last table people will circle no matter what.

It seems to me that what causes the circling is the rate people come in vs. the rate at which people leave. Regardless of who takes that last seat, in order for people to get a table right away the rate at which people leave has to be equal to or greater than the incoming flow of hungry guests. People not lingering when they are done eating will have a much, much larger impact on how long someone has to wait to find an empty table than changing the order in which someone sits at that last table.

IMHO, people hanging around after they are done eating while there are families looking for an empty table is actually kinda rude.

My 2¢ FWIW.

Mike

If there are people sitting at a table not eating, it slows down table turns if the restaurant is full...period. It doesnt matter if you've not eaten yet, or if you've finished eating.

Like I said earlier, if you're holding down a table for 10-15 minutes before you get your food, that's one less table turned in that amount of time, and you've just taken 2 "slots" at that table. Whether you take that time before or after your meal makes zero difference...and both are keeping people walking around with trays of hot food from being able to sit and enjoy it.

Sorry but I personally do not agree with either of the above bolded statements.

I always defer to a party with either young children, seniors, or an individual living with a disability. But that’s just me.

And I also think having someone in your party find a table while you are picking up your mobile order doesn’t rise to the order of heinous. Heinous is a bit dramatic imho.

Thanks

I agree. I don’t feel compelled to be a table monitor at this point in my life.

If and when Disney puts the policy in place, they take care of the monitoring. It is typically done during high season to allow those w food in hand allowed in the seating area only

Since this topic usually, and has started, to turn not so nice, we are closing this thread.
