Question for Labrador owners

I posted my Q in the show me your doggies thread but it got lost amongst the discussion of all the cuties!!!!

For those of you with labs, do any of you have short haired labs? We like our dog's hair because it's short & coarse. Our vet told us you can get a lab with this same type of hair. It's the kind of hair that really doesn't stick to much, you can brush it off easily. Not like longer lab hair that sticks to your pants if they rub on you.

I love bully breeds (ours is a Sharpei/Am Staff mix) but DH really wants a lab someday. I really don't want all that long hair around but if I can find a short haired one I'd agree to it. Would we be able to find a rescue Lab with short hair?

I saw your post, but was unsure what you were talking about, since I thought all labs had the same hair type.

I wasn't aware that there were two different types of lab hair.

I'd better look into that if there is, because DH wants a chocolate lab and we have enough fluffy hair laying around, courtesy of Chloe!

My vet used to have a lab with short hair like our dogs because he told me it was so coarse that even after she died he'd still find hairs around his car. I can picture that happening with our dog's hair.

I just wonder if there are any owners with short hair and if they shed as much as the long hair.

Our friend's just got a puppy golden and her adult hair is starting to come in. She's so funny because she's 1/2 soft and 1/2 a little less soft!

As you can see by our pic we have a yellow lab.

Just want to make sure you are not confusing labradors with goldens? I've never heard of a lab. with longer hair.

Our guy, Newman does shed. We use a shedding tool so its not too bad. Our car also has leather seats so its easy to wipe out. I love his dog personality. He is happiest being around family and will take any attention he can get (even if its him having to sit there while being dressed up!)

A lab will not have long hair unless it is a mixed breed. I'm thinking you may have labs confused with another type of retriever--golden, cheaspeek Bay or something.

I know that Labs shed as much as Goldens. I've also heard that Lab hair is harder to get off of you and your furniture, because it tends to burrow its way into the fabric, whereas Golden fur is so soft, that it can't.

Chloe was so funny looking when her adult fur starting to come in. I always thought there was one type of Golden; the one with long, silky fur.

Nooooo, Chloe started to get this wavy stripe down her spine. My vet told me that meant that she was going to have curly/wavy fur. Sure enough, as an adult, she looks like she has dreadlocks for pants and very wavy feathers everywhere else, except behind her front legs.

I'm telling you, she's a mutant.

Nope, I'm not confusing goldens with labs. The labs that I have met are the kind that if you pet them, hair falls off and it all over the place, on the floor, your hand, your clothes, etc......

My dog with the short coarse hair this doesn't really happen. My vet said he had a lab with the same kind of hair as my dog. I'll ask him again next time I see him!

This is what my DH wants to get.

Yesterday I was looking at a lab rescue for SE Texas and they had one that had been used as a bait dog for pitbulls. This sweet dog was still a sweetheart and still liked to be around other dogs.

I read that and I started crying like a baby.

YES! That's what I'm looking for. Never thought to use the term otter but that's what it's like!! Did you get yours from a breeder?

What type of brush have you guys find to be the best for labs?

My other dog is a mix with short hair so she doesn't shed near as much so I never have really brushed her. I just used my hands when she needed it.

I use one of these:

The hair goes flying! It'll look like it snowed in my backyard after I use it. DH gets peeved by the hair, but I use the excuse that the birds need it.

I also love Chloe's fur! I would love a dog with dreads like that! Too cute!

Grrr....this is what makes me mad - why can't people just own and love a dog rather than fight it? Poor lab baby! I hope she ends up in a good home.

I hope so too! She was all scarred up on her back and when she was found they said she had hundreds of dog bites on her flanks.

I need to get a full-body shot of Chloe, but she's doing her best rug impersonation right now. She's real good at it.

Here's a picture of her, so that you can show your friend. Keep in mind that her coat isn't fully in, so her pants will be about four inches longer and will look like more like dreads.

But see how wavy she is? Also, note the hair on the rug.

Yep, it's a shedding tool! I love it, because you can unloop it. For a dog the size of ours, you can cover a lot more territory!

Yes...we got him from a breeder in Pipersville PA (near Doylestown). He's an excellent dog! He just passed his first field test as a matter of fact. We'll be using him for pheasand hunting next month. He just turned one year old a few days ago. Here's some pictures of him. The first one he's 8 wks old. The next two he's about 7 months old:
