Question for Horse owners

How loud are horses? During the day? At night? If I live next to a stable, will I regret it?

LOL! Horses are very quiet, but the flies that swarm the manure might get to you in the summertime. :)

How big is the stable (how many horses are on how many acres) and how close are you going to live?

We have five horses, and our neighbors love them (of course, our neighbors are my aunt and uncle ;)). They aren't loud (seldom whinny at all). You do sometimes hear their hooves if they're running and playing.

The manure probably won't be a problem unless you're very close. If the horses are on turn out a lot, that lessens the amount of manure in the stalls. If they are in stalls a lot, most of the people I know use spreaders to spread it out over the pastures.

You're kidding right??

No, horses are among the quietest animals around. I run a boarding barn (currently home to 24 horses and my house is about 200 feet from the barn), and we have no problems with noise keeping us awake.

Being the owner, and living here, I maintain a meticulous facility. Immaculately clean and groomed, so flies and manure and stink are minimal. It HAS to be. I live here! However, many farms are not kept to my same standards, so you should inquire of the neighbors what the smell and flies are like in summer.

Noise is not even something to be slightly, remotely, maybe concerned about.

Let's just say if you hear a lot of noise(whinny) from the horse's.......you better go look because something is wrong!

Good to know. I figured they were quiet animals, but I needed to ask to make sure. Currently, we have a ton of dogs in our apartment building that bark constantly, definitely not peaceful and we NEED some peace and quiet.

The place we would live in is a carriage house on a horse farm. Our place would be probably about 300 or so ft from the stable and next to the main house. The land is about 20 acres and there are 5 or 6 horses and they are out in the pasture a lot. I don't think we would have any problems, but my husband wanted me to ask on the Dis before we made a decision.

wow, that does sound beautiful
tho i think he should be more concerned about how to get used to the quiet :cloud9:

enjoy the new place!

Sounds like a nice place.

Our first house, the next door neighbors had two horses (right next to our back yard). The horses were VERY quiet and friendly. Our neighbors didn't mind at all if we'd occasionally pet them or feed them an apple or carrot. Horses make good neighbors.
