Question for Croc experts--Crocs for a senior citizen?

My mother is 69, but her health isn't good and her body seems older than her age most days. She had a mild stroke many years ago, and her balance isn't great. She told my sister she wants a pair of Crocs for Christmas. She tried a pair on in the podiatrist's office last summer, and since then, she's seen a lot of people wearing them. She has a metal plate in her big toe. Her feet are chronically swollen, but she doesn't wear orthotics.

I don't own any Crocs, but I think they would be a bad idea in her case. Since they fit so loosely, wouldn't they be unstable for someone who has a balance problem? She lives in a two story house, and stairs are a constant issue as it is.

My mother's theory is that since they let her try them on it the podiatrist's, they must be okay. So am I wrong in my thinking?

I bought a pair of Crocs (the ones with no holes) for my DH's grandma she is a young 80. I am really excited to give her them for Chirstmas. If you don't feel to sure about it maybe call the Dr and see what they say.

Maybe if she always uses the back strap it won't be a problem. I know my Grandma would never tie her shoes or velcro them and they were actually more of a hazard on her feet. Are you concerned about them falling off on the steps?
My kids have airwalks (payless)and they have yet to fall of their feet.
I know some people buy the crocs and put them in the dryer and form them to their feet. Maybe that would help.
I wish I knew about Crocs for Grandma but she has since passed away. I think she would have liked them.
In this case, perhaps you would need to see how they fit on her feet or try the crocs and airwalks and see which have a tighter fit.

My grandmother thought they were hideous. Then, she broke her hip and, during the course of her therapy, developed a wound on her heel that prevented her wearing normal shoes. Her nurse recommended crocs. We were worried about them staying on, but so far, she LOVES them. She's a complete convert. No issues, and she's in her late 70s, definite balance issues from the hip, so I think she'd probably be ok.

My uncle who is 75 or so has some health problems, and he likes his Crocs. If your mom's feet are always swolen, her Crocs are probably not going to fit that loosely. If I have the strap on, my Crocs don't come off. I usually wear them as clogs, though.

I would think they would make great shoes for your mom to wear around the house b/c they're very comfortable.

My Mom died 2 weeks ago at age 80 after suffering mini-strokes for the past few months. We bought her some orange crocs last Christmas and she never again wore any other shoes except to go to church. I cannot emphasize enough how wonderful they are for those who have balance issues like she did.

Hope this helps!

My Mom had a stroke 2 years ago and has not been able to put on her own shoes since then. I came home for a visit wearing Crocs and Mom tried one on. Not only did she fall in love with their softness she was able to put them on herself! Now she wears them all over and has several pairs in all sorts of bright colors.

Make sure she doesn't wear them out in the rain!

I bought a pair to wear when we took our fishing trip this year. I thought they would be ideal. But when they got wet, my feet slipped around in them too much.

Should have just bought boat shoes!

Wow, thanks so much for all the feedback! I knew this was the place to ask my question.

I'm very surprised by your answers, but you've convinced me that I need to get Mom a pair of Crocs (blue) as one of her presents.
