Does it really make a difference in what resort you buy into? Except for being able to book 11 months out versus 7 months, are there any other advantages?

I just bought into the DVC today at the Boardwalk. From what I gather it may or may not matter depending on your travel habits. If you travel during the school vacation season the extra 4 months may be beneficial. I personnally bought into BWV because if I ever had to sell my contract it may be easier to unload verses a SSR because there is more demand on the property being walking distance to two parks. Hopefully some of the more experienced DCV'ers will help, they have been fantastic here. As I have yet to utilize my points....some one may correct me if I'm wrong..the rookie

Length of time is a factor too...36 years vs 48 years....

The maint fees per point are different at each resort.

So this also is affected by where you buy. The annual fees at one resort can be more or less than at another resort for the same number of points.

So the cost per point might be less for a given resort up front, but over time this could be offset by higher fees.

Hi, Some will say that you need to buy where you want to stay.
But I have not had a problem booking any resort in the 7 month window.I just called last week and made my reservation for May.I called today to check availibility for someone here for July 16th for a week at BCV and there was availibility.
What is very appealing about SSR is the extra years and then they are offering the friends and family till the end of the month and that will get you 15% off for SSR.That would make the point I think 83.30 pp.
So to me I have never had a problem booking any of my vacations. We stay at all the resorts,so if I dont get my first preference then I move to the second.

So ultimately it is really all about the 11 month window. But unless you are going at the super, busy times then should not have a problem.
BTW, I sent you a PM.

I agree with Misty. We own at OKW and bought before BCV, VWL or SSR even existed. I don't think I'd ever have any trouble selling my OKW contract if we had to. I also have never had any trouble booking at the 7 month window or less and getting at least a choice of 1 or 2 of my non-home resorts. I've had availability open to me at BWV and BCV at 50 days out in the middle of the summer. I think if you plan on traveling during Oct/Nov/Dec you will have difficulty getting into the smaller resorts (particularily BWV & BCV for Food & Wine Festival and VWL for Dec). Heck, I even had trouble getting a 2 bedroom at OKW in early Nov. This time period is just very popular for DVC Members, so I'd suggest buying a specific resort if you really have your heart set on staying at a particular location. The resort I've experienced the most difficulty with is VWL and I think it's because that resort is so much smaller than the others.

Agreed, but I just don't know if one can bank on it's home resort not having a large increase one year ? Not positive this is a sure thing to count on ?

Agreed as well. For us, dh and I will be 76 & 78 at the end of our OKW contract, so the extra 12 years at SSR doesn't inspire us to buy there (based on that fact alone). If we were younger, I would say it would.
Good luck with your decision.

depends - do you want to visit WDW in early Dec, thanksgiving, Oct/nov (food/wine festavial) - then you better buy in WDW.

if you want to stay in BWV or BCV for the food/wine - it would be best to buy one of these. that say yes sometime you can get one - but don't plan on it every year - not going to happen.

I too love OKW - been going in 93 and I still love it!!!

I also own a small contract at both VWL and BWV for those very hard to get times...

Well so far for me I have yet to stay at my main home resort.BWV Pretty tough times to get though were this past Thanksgiving week. Waitlist never came thur.

Tried for this upcoming end of Jan. No availability. I was looking for a studio for 3 nights at either BWV.

Lots of Availabilty at SSR though-

From what I am seeing...SO FAR...is that you need to plan ahead and make use of that 11 month window.

I am staying at BWV for the first time this upcoming May (F&G).. and I did book it day by day at the 11 month window for Oct {F&W}.

I bought BWV in 1999. The choice was OKW via resale or BWV direct from DVC. At that time, there were very few BWV resales on the market. I liked both resorts, I wanted to be able to stay at OKW in May and BWV in early December. I bought BWV because I knew it was hard to get it for early December, I wanted that 11 month advantage. Never regretted my decision, especially now with the guaranteed BW view.

Here's a link to a thread started a while back about the whole issue of buying into DVC. It starts off with a discussion of "home resort," and may be helpful.

Like everyone has said it all depends on when you plan to vacation? Like HHI, if you plan on going there in the summer the 11 month window really makes it easier to get what you want. I have a reservation for the last week in June. I wanted a studio at the BCV, but was not able to get it. I do have a ressie for VWL for the same time and I am on the wait list for BCV. I have waitlisted 6 times now and have never had one come through. I have seen a lot of folks talk about waitlisting and getting what they want. But it hasn't worked out for me as of yet. So, what you will need to do is make you first choice on where you want to stay and then try your 2nd if that doesn't work. Then get on the waitlist for you 1st choice, maybe you will get lucky. I will say I have never been disapointed with my 2nd choices, because I don't think there is a bad resort in WDW in my book. :earsboy:

It makes a big difference to a lot of people to own the resort they wish to go to the most. That probably makes a difference for the smaller resorts and certain times of the year and if you will always make your ressie more than 7 months ahead. You will have to decide how important place and time is for you.
That never seems to work for us..... we own at BVC & SSR but we stay most of the time at OKW because of the lower points.
Good Luck in your decision.

In addition to the additional 12 years at SSR the dues may stay lower as the years go on since there are alot of points that the costs are spread over. If you do not take advantge of the 11 month window then at 7 months points are points no matter which resort you have.

Unless you own at BWV, booking a grand villa or any category of Boardwalk view villa there is pretty much impossible unless done at 11 months, on a day to day basis.
