question about renting DVC points

We have been long time DVC owners and I am long time DIS user but have never thought of renting out points. Lately we arent visiting WDW as much and want to rent some points out. I understand basics but does the person renting out usually take a deposit? It would make sense to me. About how much would be appropriate to ask for?

TIA
Matt

P.S. Any more tips would be appreciated. :)

We rented points from a DVC member earlier this year and paid a 50% deposit of $600 just to make the reservation. Our trip wasn't for another 8 months, (made reservation in February, trip isn't until late October) but the DVC member then wanted the balance payment within 30 days of making the reservation. I thought that was asking a little much since we weren't traveling until October, but I wanted the points so I paid it. :confused3

Renting points can be a great way to use points while at the same time give some one a great deal on a WDW stay. For me, I'm not a habitual renter but I've done it twice. I get 50% at the time of the reservation and 50% 90 days prior to departure.

Let me preface this with I don't rent out my points, but I have read lots of posts about those that do. Make sure you don't get into a situation where you can't bank those points into next year (if you would be able to do that) by the non-member deciding somewhere along the way that they don't want to rent from you. Make the deposit non-refundable to cover yourself. Don't don't get into a situation where a non-member wants to pay it out and then you don't get payment before 31 days out. If you have to cancel, make sure you can still either use the reservation or the points at a later date. Lots of members allow no cancellation without losing whatever has already been paid. Remembe about holding and reservation points.

If you can rent them out to friends or family members that you trust, that might be the safest thing in the long run.

I'll add, think about this as a business...you may get hard luck stories about why your points should be rented for less than you think they are worth, or why they can't put up the deposit 'just yet' and can they have two weeks. Or that they can't make the final payment 'just yet' and can you wait just a little more.

Give yourself enough cushion to be able to be nice to these "check is in the mail" stories - because the check might actually be in the mail - but don't let yourself be a doormat. Your role is not to subsidize a stranger's vacation.

We just became members and actually offered up our points for rent. Since we've rented points in the past, we felt comfortable doing it.

My rules are 10% down... 25% after they get the confirmation letter and balance 45 days out.

what renters have to understand it's a risk on both parts and it's hard to put trust in a bunch pixals on the monitor.

We've gotten lucky with our rentals and the lady who's renting our points this time is paying all at once since the reservation is less than 60 days...

best thing I've ever read is just protect yourself at all costs.
