Question about Princess Diana's engagement ring

As soon as I find out the true color of the band, I'll order one. The one from QVC looks great, even if some reviews said it was very dark. As long as the band color matches her ring, I;ll buy it. But where and how do I find out for sure what the band is?? Please help me or I;ll be up all night trying to decide what to do.

Well I have to go to sleep if I want to be rested enough to get to school tomorrow. We're doing VD crafts and the kids wouldn't like me anymore if I came in late and had no time to do the crafts! lol

I hope some ring sleuths will help me find the answer I need so i can buy the ring. The answer I need is what color is the band on Diana's and Kate's ring? From looking at it it looks yellow gold but all the info out there says different things.

So goodnight, and thanks for your help! I just love that ring and I always loved Princess Diana when I was a young girl.

Thanks Ember and Imzadi. I fell backward down a *very steep*35 foot concrete driveway Christmas Eve. Broke both knees, fractured a hand and cracked the left side of my jaw bone. Face looked as though a semi had run over it a few times...ER nurse had a horrible time digging gravel out of it. Did a brain scan because they believed from the looks of things that I could have a bleed on the brain. That, thankfully, was negative. This sure ruined the holidays for our family and I had to stay at my step sons house until I could be moved. Awful! I feel pretty good now. :thumbsup2

It *was* awful but at least I didn't knock teeth out. Slow as I'm creeping these days, one can't help but be careful. Appreciate the hug! :goodvibes

DH bought me a replica Diana ring several years ago without knowing it (he's not into royalty); he bought it because he liked it! It really is a little different - it's 18k gold with 3 diamonds at the top and 3 at the bottom, with emerald-cut diamonds on the sides. Has a good-sized sapphire in the middle. But at first glance, it's a double for her ring.

My husband bought me a replica! I love it!! I'm not sure where he got it though. He ordered it before our Disney trip, hoping he could give it to me then, but it ended up coming while we were there. He got to the mail before I did when we got home and put the certifcate in with my mail. I glanced at it, not knowing what it was and tossed it to the side. Then I looked up and he had the ring box. He said "I can't afford the real one, so this will have to do.":lovestruc

And in this picture the band looks like yellow (golden) gold.

It was originally white gold. If you looked at the links posted in my first reply to this thread, you can see that it was originally white gold. White gold very often turns yellowish gold when it has been worn for awhile. It needs to be redipped to turn it back to white gold. My wedding and engagement ring are white gold and are fading to yellow gold again. Most of your white gold jewelry probably is rhodium plated. But there is a practical problem because rings are very high wear items, and even with a good thick rhodium plating, it will start wearing in spots and there will be a strong contrast as the yellow starts showing through.

If the rhodium is thin and wears through, you see the underlying material (which is 18 K gold in Diana's ring) which is not as white as it was when she first got it.

Wow Phamton...very interesting and informative. The things one can learn here. :thumbsup2

why is the band so thin?

In pictures of replica rings, the band looks thick but in the one with the real ring on her finger it looks quite thin. Seems that the band would have been wider to really balance with those stones :confused3.

I'm so sorry this happened to you! I hope your recovery continues well and that you heal more and more each day.

Mrs. Darcy, I hope you find the perfect replica ring! The informtion here about the original is really interesting. I love the Royals too and am following the wedding hype and loving it~

I was trying to remember if somethign along those lines wasn't true.

I know DH has white gold accents on his wedding ring which have slowly faded to a more yellow color, but I couldn't remember if it was caused by a fading issue or if it was a metal -to-metal contact issue.

My guess was to allow room for the wedding band to fit under the stone of the engagement ring.

Unlike our sets that are made to show both I think they knew there was only so much room on a woman's finger and with a rock that size the band would have to slide under it or else it wouldn't fit between knuckles! plus there would be a huge gab between rings on the back.

This is what I think, too, because I saw photos of her Diana's finger with both the engagement and wedding rings on it and the wedding ring fit nicely up against the thin band under the sapphire.

So I take it this is a "blue" diamond, and that this rock was part of the royal family jewel collection? Kind of like the necklace in Titanic. Bet its a decent collection. How would you like to have access to the "Crown Jewels" :rotfl2:

Isn't it a sapphire? I've heard conflicting stories that Diana specifically wanted a sapphire instead of a diamond but also that sapphire is the traditional engagement ring stone in England.

And yes Ides, I'd love to have access to the Crown Jewels. You know somebody?

Definitely a possibility!

Interestingly, while my cheap white gold ring is doing that, as is my hubby's plain white gold wedding band (not cheap, not expensive, just normal), my grandmother's engagement ring is NOT. Hers was made in the early '30s, and is as white as my platinum ring is. Seems the wearing through thing might be b/c of newer techniques.

Nope, she bought it from a collection that was available to the public at the time. And it's a sapphire.

I always figured that the sapphire ring was white gold. But her wedding band was made from that Welsh gold nugget...I didn't see many pictures just now of her wearing both, she seems to have played around with her rings (as I do), wearing both sometimes, different ones sometimes, etc etc. Of course, for her it was probably fashion (and maybe a bit of "my husband never loved me"), whereas with me it's "my fingers are too fat for my real rings and I'm tired of the looks I get when wearing NO ring while my hubby is wearing his, so I'll get a selection of rings to wear while working on getting this weight off" LOL.
