Question about Princess Diana's engagement ring

She was shown a selection of rings and she chose this one and it was an 18 carat sapphire I think about the 18 carats. but she picked it out.

Her wedding band was a different color that the engagement ring. one was white-I always thought it would be platinum, and the band was yellow gold.

The christmas after Charles and Diana's wedding or maybe it was for my birthday...anyway, my mom bought me one of the replica rings they sold then which was gold. Which I don't wear, so I never wear the thing, but I would have worn it if it had been silver which I do like.

One of the articles I read said that it was 18 karat gold, but some journalist got it mixed up and started reporting that the sapphire was that big, though they say it's not.

Just something else to think about!

Anyone out there an expert in sapphires who can tell us if a stone that size (it's large on Diana and Catherine's fingers, but both of those women are/where very slim with long slim fingers, but it's not very *deep* or tall, however you want to think of it) would actually be 18 carats?

Isn't it a sapphire? I've heard conflicting stories that Diana specifically wanted a sapphire instead of a diamond but also that sapphire is the traditional engagement ring stone in England.

And yes Ides, I'd love to have access to the Crown Jewels. You know somebody?

It is a sapphire. You're right. only here in America, probably because of ads by DeBeers & such, is a diamond pushed for an engagement stone. Fergie (HRH, not the singer,) had an emerald.

So I take it this is a "blue" diamond, and that this rock was part of the royal family jewel collection? Kind of like the necklace in Titanic. Bet its a decent collection. How would you like to have access to the "Crown Jewels" :rotfl2:

Anyone can see the Crown Jewels. They are on display in the Tower of London. I saw them. The bling is stunning! :faint: Because there are so many crowds coming to see the display, there is a conveyor belt that people have to get on which automatically moves people past the display, or they'd never move away from in front of the crowns. They even looked heavy. I can't imagine wearing one.

Diana's ring has become part of the crown jewels collection, when she died, as it is part of the Royal history. William asked for it after she died, but it is still part of the collection.

Actually, I think she had a ruby. I saw in an interview that he said he knew it had to a ruby because of her hair color. I being a ruby fan, love that ring better than Di's shappire ring, although I would be happy with either of them!!!

I wonder if the marriage doesn't work out (I hope it does!) will Kate legally be allowed to keep the ring? Or does it belong to the crown jewels collection and the ring isn't really hers?

Bumping this up to see if anyone has an opinion about if Kate now owns the ring.

My guess is that it goes back to the royal family. I am sure Kate had to sign some agreement agreeing to that.

It's probably addressed somewhere in what has to be one massive Pre-Nuptial agreement.

As for the ring itself, it is my understanding that it is private family heirloom and not part of the Crown Jewels. It was at one time part of Princess Diana's estate.

You're killing me!:lmao: My husband will definitely go for the $29.99 ring instead of the $99.99 one, considering they're both fake! Ok you convinced me, it'll be the $29.99 ring!:thumbsup2

Your right. It was a Burmese Ruby in the center, surrounded by 10 diamonds. I got confused as she always wore green clothes as that always looked good with her hair. I remember Andrew picked her stone because of her hair.

I believe it goes back to the Crown Jewels collection. Other than what the queen owns herself, which is extensive, from what I had read, pretty much most of the wealth of the Royal family is due to the generosity of the British people. They don't really own much of anything. Everything is pretty much loaned to them during their lifetime. They do earn a salary for doing duties for their Royal positions.

Similarly, right after the Egyptian President stepped down, all the presidential assets were frozen by Swiss banks and the Egyptian Army asked that his and his family's assets be frozen here in the U.S., as it really belongs to the Egyptian government. I guess what actually belongs to him will be sorted out later.

For anyone interested in the HSN ring, I received mine today. It is very well made, all stones uniform and clear. It does look more black indoors or in dim light, but outdoors and in bright light it is more blue. For $29.99 I think it is a great deal. I think for me it would be more of a special occasion ring than every day.

Don't mind the poofy fingers...they happen every month like clockwork

Ok I'm convinced. I'm ordering it now and will post a picture when I get it! Thanks for posting that!!! It's beautiful!

My personal opinion is that if Kate and William divorced, she would keep the ring. Diana kept her ring upon her divorce and only upon her death did Harry choose to keep it as a momento of his mother. He, then gave it to William for Kate. The ring has never been tied into the crown jewels, which are a totally different thing, nor did it go back to the royal family when Di and Charles divorced (although, I bet Diana would have probably given the ring to one of her sons if she was alive). Also, Prince Charles has his own money, due to revenues from the Duchy of Cornwall, so he might have paid for Diana's ring from his own funds.

Here's a link (don't know how reliable,) stating "The personal jewels of Lady Diana are noted as such. If the jewels were not loaned to her by the Queen, they are the property of Lady Diana. After her death, they were either sold or put away for her children, Prince William and Prince Harry to inherit. . . []

"Princess Diana was allowed to keep the jewels given by the Queen after her divorce, on condition that they could not be lent or sold. However, after her death the jewels were returned to the Queen."

I would imagine some sort of similar deal would also be made with Kate, should they break up or divorce. That ring still has the history that it belonged to Diana, and thus is part of the Royal history. (Plus, it is dear to both William & Harry.) Kate having had it for a while would just be an addendum to the already established history.

I think eventually the ring will become part of the Royal Family jewelry collection. The Crown Jewels are only part of the whole collection. During their lifetime the Royals get pretty much everything they own, on loan. This is why the non-Royalists make such a fuss about how much they lavishly have & spend. Even their salaries/duchys are furnished by the British taxpayers. So when they make lavish purchases they are criticized for it, because ultimately it's taxpayers' monies.

The ring is now part of the Royal history. A history which helps the Royals earn for their keep. Which is why I would think it would go into the Royal Collection. I had to pay admission to see the Crown Jewels & collection, when I went. The Royal Jewelery collection isn't just the crowns. It's a museum collection, pretty much all the past Royal jewelry. I remember the room clearly as I was exceptionally dazzled by the crowns and the gazillion other jewelry pieces, labeled with their full history and who were the owner(s.) It's a huge museum space. Think of 3 full jewelry stores stacked in and around that room, with the largest, brightest bling imaginable.

Diana had even borrowed a few old pieces from former queens/duchesses and had them reset into more modern settings to wear this lifetime. I remember reading about it when she had them done. They are able to retrace the whole history, like an ancestral tree, of who gave it to who, who next owned it and wore it for what occasion, and so on, until Diana reset the stones. Now, her re-settings are part of the history of those pieces.

Diana's ring would bring in a lot of money for viewers who want to see it. The OP wants to OWN a replica. Case in point. It helps promote more of the Royal Monarchy.
