We plan on going to WDW during Easter, which I know is a popular time. Our home is AKV and I can make a reservation now. However, we would rather try another resort this time. Should I go ahead and reserve it and then change it later if I find our resort of preference is available? :confused3

Yes definitely get something, you might not get what you want later.

Safest course is always to reserve home resort to assure you have something and then try to switch at 7 months out. As to chances elsewhere, if Easter time is the same as it was for this year, you will find that it is not actually a very high DVC demand time and it is likely you will be able to get rooms at the near park resorts at 7 months out other than BLT standard view and BWV standard and boardwalk view.

I would. Even if you are 'borrowing' points, as long as you use them in this use year, you are fine.

I would not wait.

If you are using current use year points, then there is really no reason not to. Then try and change at 7 months out.

Thanks for the advice, I will go ahead and book and borrow the points. I am still trying to figure the ins and outs of the system. I also realized it's only for 2 nights as we will be staying after our 4 night cruise, so hopefully I can change it out.

Make sure the new reservation (if you can book something else) requires the same or more points. Otherwise, you might have points that you cannot use (depending on where you are in your UY).
