From the standpoint of a Interval International owner, I was wondering if some here have experience with this?

-How difficult is it to trade through II to get a reservation at DVC?
-How much trading power does a typical II timeshare week have against a DVC reservation?
-What kind of inventory does II normally have for trading into DVC?

Thanks!

The short reply is: not much. Basically, there are not many members who trade out of DVC. That doesn't mean that it doesn't happen, but there are about a dozen trades out per month, out of 70,000 members, so your chances of trading in are slim. You increase your chances if you trade down to a one bedroom after depositing a two bedroom. Since DVC doesn't have actual "weeks" like most timeshares, once a member deposits the required number of points and get the trade, DVC takes those points and decides what week they are going to deposit into II, usually off-times when they aren't usually full anyway. Many members have DVC, and then we have other timeshares that are used to trade, so we tend to save our points for onsite stays. There have been several recently who have reported getting their trades into DVC, so it never hurts to try. :)

There isn't a whole lot of DVC inventory in II. When it does come up, it's for off season and usually January or September (low season time - and possible hurricanes or cold weather). It's usually studios or 1 bedrooms. For a studio, by the time a person pays their dues on their home resort (say $400 to $600 a year), the $135 II trade fee, and the $95 DVC resort fee for trading in, they'd be better off to either own a small package of DVC points or rent the DVC points off the Dis boards for their trip.

A resort has to be fairly high quality to trade into DVC. Low rated resorts won't have enough trade power to trade into the high quality timeshares (like Marriott, Hyatt, Disney, etc.). Also, other Orlando timeshares can't trade into DVC. There's a regional block.

It is hard to tell because the only weeks that show up online are ones where no request has been made.

Personally, I have traded into DVC the past 4 years. I have always used my studio lockout from Marriott or an accomodation certificate so the cost is about $200 - $500 for a 160 to 240 point week.

As stated, the most availability is in January and September. I have used a 1br at OKW in January 3 times and a 2br at OKW in September. After that the next best time is usually May. I often see BCV, SSR, and OKW 1BR and VWL but mostly studios. Never see Epcot resorts for the F&W festival, Christmas, etc. Summer may be available, but you would need to put in an ongoing request to have any chance.

Bottom line is if you have a decent trader and can go at a less popular time you can get good value out of II for DVC. If you want to be "in the thick of things" then you should purchase DVC. I expect the inventory to continue to increase as they build more resorts.

DVC is not that difficult to trade to if you have sufficient trade power AND sufficient home resort quality. As a rule, getting a 1 BR or smaller during Jan, early Feb, May, late Aug, Sept, early Oct and early Dec. You need to be looking a full 11 months out and be willing to accept any resort, but mostly OKW and SSR. As for trading power of a given II resort/week; it's impossible to make blanket statements. Besides, II doesn't give the actual info and it's only by indirect inferences that we can deduce much of this info.

I think there are far more DVC units available than most people realize and they are generally easier to get than most think as well. Still, one generally needs a resort that most would consider a higher quality resort and at least a 1 BR (there are exceptions) though a 2 BR gives you a much better chance.

There has been a very significant decease in the number of available DVC units online with II over the past 6 weeks. There are VERY few 2BRs (almost nonexistent now), only a few 1BRs, and a smattering of studios during the months identified by Dean.

The more people know about the availability, the less availability that there will be. I think that is why there has been a decrease.

It always happens this time of year. You'll see a lot of May VB units start to crop up and a smattering of units at WDW for Feb, March, April and May mostly studios. You'll also see a very few summer studios including prime weeks but more for late August. You'll also start to see another round of Sept units fairly soon as well.

As predicted, a number of units fitting my exact parameters as above. I picked up a 2 Br May VB unit but most everything else has either been short notice or studios but include VWL, BCV and BWV.
