Question about Disney gift cards

I put this question the dining forum, because that's what I'm going to gear it toward,

Let's say I were to save up money now, and buy a disney gift card worth (just as a sample figure) $1000 in advance of my trip, and used this down at Disney.

First of all, dumb question, but do most restaurants and stores accept a gift card down there?

The thing is, I'm thinking, if I don't want to buy into the DDP plan (chatting about this in a different post), then I was thinking we could use the gift card down there on all our food, and sort of use it like a declining balance card... and that way it wouldn't be so much like every thing we were buying down there was coming out of our pocket immediately.

Could this work first of all? Anything I'm not thinking about that would be a drawback to it? Other than losing the card of course, so I'd have DH in charge of the card, lol.

And one other question..... are you allowed to buy gift cards with the Disney Visa??

At this time, we have about $200 we can put on a rewards card, which we'll be doing before we leave.. but was thinking we could save up the $1000, buy the gift card, and pay the visa off immediately (as we always do to avoid the high interest rate)... and then get the 3% reward dollars to put onto the rewards card also...

I don't see any advantage to buying the Disney gift card instead of just using your Disney VISA especially if you pay off your balance at the end of the month. However, I see one huge disadvantage to buying the gift card (especially if it's for a large amount) and that is it's like carrying cash and if you lose it, that's a big loss. I am pretty sure you cannot buy a gift card using your Disney VISA. I believe I read that here not long ago.

Yea, I'd feel pretty sick if we did in fact lose it..

Just was thinking though, it would be a nice way to "pre-pay" and not have to be thinking that we'd be having to pay off everything we buy down there.

Guess I could do the same with the Disney Visa.. could just pay extra on that in advance, and have a credit on it, lol.

You can buy Disney git cards with your disney visa, you cannot buy disney dollars with the disney visa. I do not think there is anything wrong with buying some gift cards ahead of time if it helps you feel like you have prepaid.
All disney restaurants and stores take them. Well, there are a few of the carts that are not able to, but for the most part everywhere will.

Just make a copy of the back of the card. If you lose it call the 800 number on the back of the card and give them the card number. As long as someone didn't find it and go on a shopping spree they will see what is left on the card cancel it and issue you a new card. I am unsure if you go to guest services to get a new card or what but that would be my guess that they could then call the 800 number for authorization. Always make copies of your park tickets or any other Disney ticket incase you lose it. Guest services just cancels the old cards and reissues new ones but you must have the number from the cards.

I agree. I actually think that's a pretty good idea. I would buy a few cards with lesser amounts on them, so if I lose one, I still have others to fall back on.
