Question about adding a third person to a room

I'm helping my parents book their cruise along with my aunt and uncle. They're planning on getting 2 rooms with 2 people in each. However my uncle won't know for sure if he'll be able to make it until April which is still before the pay in full date.

Question is, is it more expensive to add a third person later on(my aunt) to my parents room if my uncle can't go? Or should they book 2 rooms now with 2 in one room and 3 in the other (can 1 person be listed in both rooms?) and have them cancel the third person if that won't be needed? I hope this makes sense

I'm not real clear are there 5 possible people going to cruise?

Yes, if you add a third person later, their cost will be the prevailing cost for them, not the cost it would be to put them on the reservation initially. Generally cruise prices rise the closer you get to a cruise.

You also have another issue. If the lifeboat capacity for the room you want to add someone to has been reached before you add them, you can't put them on the reservation. Unless you move to a (usually higher priced) different category, in a different location on the ship.

It's best to put all people on the reservation initially that might come, and then remove them if they aren't going to make it. You can cancel people/reservations all the way up to the Paid in Full date, with no penalty (unless you book Concierge.

No, one person cannot be on two reservations.

Thanks, was considering putting my aunt in both rooms and cancelling one as it got closer but I guess that can't be done

I don't believe you can put one person on two different reservations. If you could, you'd be paying the deposit for them twice.

Could OP put herself as a 3rd in her parents' room, then change to her aunt's name if her uncle cancels out. Otherwise cancel her own 3rd res if her uncle and aunt need their room?

I think they're ok paying more of a deposit since if that third person cancels they can just apply that to what they owe

Since when can't one person be in two reservations? Happens all the time (think about the people who reshop their cruises onboard and have to wait for their travel agent to cancel the first reservation; not to mention opening day when TAs book clients in different categories and hold those reservations). You can put anyone's name in the reservation and as long as there is proper deposit applied, the reservation will hold. In most cases, people sort it out fairly quickly because they don't want to pay for multiple reservations they don't need but the computer wouldn't auto-cancel just because it has two guests with the same name/birthday.

So I would recommend adding your aunt to both reservations. This will ensure that the space and price is held until they know for sure if your uncle is going. As long as that is before final payment time, it won't cost anymore overall (even though it will be a higher deposit initially).
