Good morning all! No rain here today. Mother's Day was nice.
I took a ride by myself in the afternoon down to Point Lookout State Park, mostly for me as I love to gaze at the water and can do some birdwatching down there. The water was very rough and it was pretty windy by the shore.
Since I dressed for it, this was invigorating for me, although it was pretty chilly. Wore my winter parka so I was pretty cozy.
They've been renovating the supposedly haunted lighthouse and it's looking great! If you google it you will see a dilapidated building with an 8 foot fence and a 'keep off government property' sign. All that is gone and you are able to walk freely about the grounds. I don't know if the building has been opened yet as I didn't try to get in and no car parked that would indicate a park employee inside.
This property is particularly historical due to 1812 revolution and the Civil War era. It's got in my opinion a particularly dark past, but for myself and my family we've had many happy moments here, from day visits to fishing trips to camping trips. So, I'm enjoying a little bit of revitalization and protection for the vulnerable coastline. It's an exposed peninsula that juts out into the convergence of three rivers, Potomac, Patuxent and St. Mary's, and meets the Chesapeake Bay. On clearer days with good binoculars you can see across to Smith Island and in summer you can take the day cruise over there, 1 and 1/2 hours each way and 2 and 1/2 hours on the island, on a 4 day weekend schedule. Smith Island cake! Maybe crabs for lunch? I haven't done the cruise but friends enjoyed it. You can book it online, and they also have the Crisfield to Smith Island tour which most are familiar with. I don't think as many people know of the PL tours as it's a pretty out of the way location.
The Virginia side is much closer and I can actually see a former neighbor's house with my binoculars, if I choose to sweep that way, but I'm mostly looking for sea birds not people, lol.
The ride in was a little wet with the surf pounding the rocks.

This is what the lighthouse looks like now:

Fishing pier- I wasn't up to battling the wind to take a walk out on it, but I saw a guy do it and seriously wondered about his sanity.

You can barely see the Great Blue Heron in the middle of this picture but I had my binoculars to find him and then snapped several cell phone pics until I found him in this one. He/she is in the high center.
