Quarantine and chill and kindness chatty clubhouse: Jump in and join the conversation! All is welcome!

A few things to catch up on... favorite childhood toys, pound puppies, strawberry shortcake dolls, my roller skates and fake stove and sink. We played roller skating restaurant in my driveway making food out of sand or mushy apples from the yard. I always wanted an easy bake oven and never got one. My mom would help me make cookies in the real oven.

Red, white, and blue: take a box of white cake mix, 1 egg, cream cheese, and white choc chips. Makes a cakemix cookie that doesn’t melt like choc. Chip. Add red, white , and blue sprinkles on top, there’s you’re 4 th of July cookie
For the fall, use spice cake and pumpkin or butterscotch chips. Use spray or parchment paper on cookie sheets due to the cakemix.

QOTD #1 for today the 5th of July: What are your favorite red, white, and blue treats.

red - Swedish fish
white - ??
blue - blue raspberry slushies or snow-cones

QOTD #2 for July 5th: Who (or what) makes you smile when you think of these colors red, white, and blue.

red - my mom, whose favorite holiday was Valentine's Day
white - weddings, and what happy occasions they are
blue - water, because I love the lake, the ocean, little backyard streams...

Admittedly I don’t really have a favorite red, white & blue dessert. My husband loveslovesloves pretzel salad though- does that count as the red?!?!? Haha-
Husbands biggest regret is not joining service- he thinks he could have done with the structure and discipline when he came out of high school. We are very proud of youngest who is in army nat’l guard. Headed for second deployment in about a month. I thought that basic training would just destroy my kid. Boy was I wrong, it was a good lesson for me as a mom- raise them up and then let them do their own damn thing! They’ll survive, just like all the other 18 & 19 year olds who have done it. He’s taken to it like a fish to water and is thriving. And getting a excellent education and quite possibly a career out of it.
Both my grandfathers and both my husbands grandfathers served, plus 2 of my husbands uncles and two of our nephews and a cousin.

We saw the stealth bomber and 4 other jets fly by in formation while at DGS's birthday party. It was really awesome and I felt a sense of pride. The little ones really loved the noise and the planes.

Red white and blue make me think of berries and whipped cream. Also, I think of the frozen bomb popsicles which were so refreshing yesterday. Can you tell I am hungry, waiting for DH to finish cooking on the grill?

My father and father in law were both in WWII, my dad in the army in North Africa and Europe and my FIL in the Navy in the Pacific. I think of their service on the 4th of July.

Sparkle, love your roller skating restaurant memory, how fun! :) Thank you for sharing.

PollyannaMom, glad to see another blue icee fan! I actually first tried the one at Coke Corner as a kind treat from a Dis-er I met to wait for Candlelight 5 years ago. We had taken a bench break (others in her family were holding down the fort) to get a cool drink and she told me about them. I remember the containers came with either very dark blue or bright red Mickey ears and I was asked which color I wanted. I said bright red because to me that was much more cheerful and Christmas-y. I don't have that cup anymore (I actually passed it on as a gift) but maybe one day will get another. Nice memory of that day and getting to meet a very nice family. Also, was reminded from your reply of white and Easter, especially Sunrise service. A little stream sure sounds peaceful right now, too!

Easyas123, of course it does 🥨🥗 I love it :D God Bless your son and other in your family who have served.

Snowysmom, thanks to all in your family who have served. I hope you enjoy your meal! :)

I really want to say again how much I appreciate this thread and everyone on it. It is a nice place to relax. Unfortunately I am finding the community board to be getting more snarky and mean. I remember pre covid when I could read most threads on the community board. Now I have to be very careful but I can always come here. Thanks!

We had a nice few days, sort of like @lovemygoofy up at the relative’s lake house with good food, fresh air and family. :lovestruc

Praying for those with ovarian cancer. I lost my hair from chemo and it was one of the most difficult parts of the whole experience. :(

Back home now. Looks like today will be a little pool time and a nap at some point! As beautiful as the lake house is I missed my central air on Thursday night when it remained hot and humid until at least 2am! :faint:

One of my favorite toys as a child was my Mrs. Beasley doll. I liked my Chrissy, too, with the hair that “grew”. I did have an Easy Bake Oven (loved that story, omg what a keeper! :lovestruc ) and I remember liking Tinker Toys. I did want a race car set but was not allowed to have one because I was a girl! :furious: ). I also loved Lawrence Welk as did my mother. When she was on hospice we kept a music channel on the TV of the music she loved. Good memories of LW and nice to have so many people who remember here.

@Snowysmom I understand what you mean about the CB.

Happy Sunday everyone.

The fireworks were awful out here last night :( Some sounded right on top of my building almost, so loud. I pray all went safely. I, of course, sincerely pray, too, everyone is had a good 4th!

QOTD #1 for today the 5th of July: What are your favorite red, white, and blue treats.

QOTD #2 for July 5th: Who (or what) makes you smile when you think of these colors red, white, and blue.
1. Don't think I have any favorite red, white or blue treats........maybe M&Ms,

2. DGS......whenever he sees those colors together, he thinks it is Captain America

@flyingdumbo127 --Thank you for staying on top of the daily questions. It has been so hot here lately, I can barely think of the things I have to do, never mind think up new questions, lol! I appreciate the time you are taking to think of them, and I love your comments on other members threads, you are always so thoughtful!

QOTD #1 for today the 5th of July: What are your favorite red, white, and blue treats.

Like another poster said--bomb pops, mmmm..could use one right about now. If I have to pick them separately--Red--fresh strawberries with whipped cream. Blue-Fresh blueberries on cheerios or special K cereal White--angel food cake!

QOTD #2 for July 5th: Who (or what) makes you smile when you think of these colors red, white, and blue.
Funny that you asked that one. I am sitting here looking at our shelf full of Patriotic Disney Beanie Babies, and they make both of us smile. We have Minnie as Betsy Ross, Mickey as George Washington, Minne as Statue of Liberty, Mickey as Uncle Sam Mickey, Minnie, Pluto and Donald all dressed in military outfits and carrying flags, Goofy as Uncle Sam, and Pluto as Uncle Sam. Also Have Pooh wearing a tri color hat and dressed for the Fourth of July. And I have a Figment Fourth of July one too!
Anotherr thing that makes me smile is the American Flag. No matter what our country is going thru, I look at the flag and I feel pride and love for my country.

Snowysmom, hug, and I agree wholeheartedly about what a truly special thread this is. Thank you and everyone for being a daily part of it! I rarely open any of the other CB threads.

Aww, that's wonderful Pea-n-Me that you got to enjoy time at a relative's lake house. That sounds absolutely lovely to me right now! I watched an episode of Lakefront Bargain Hunt on Demand last night. I'm sorry you never did get to have your race car set, that's awful the reason why :( I loved my matchbox cars when I was little. I don't think my interest in them lasted too long but they were fun. One day when this plague is over, maybe I'll get to surprise you in some way with some type of little car 🏎 I have a church friend whose last name is Worth. I saw (pre plague) at CVS (CVS often has a display of bigger toy cars) an orange car with that name on it! I grabbed it for my friend and what a Blessing it was so send it to him recently as a welcome home for the hospital gift.

🙏 and  too going through Cancer and survivors of it! Horrible disease that is for sure :( I've definitely known people with it. One of the happiest times of my life was spent as a volunteer so many moons ago volunteering that the Cancer society thrift store. I honestly am not sure how/why I got into doing that other than I absolutely remember as a very young child my Grandparents had a sunken bath tub. I loved to play in it! I remember among other things playing both at the tub and in their sink pretending I was helping to invent a cure for Cancer (out of shampoos and other soap products that my Grandparents had)! Wow, I had not thought about that in years. I am not even sure I ever told anyone I did that until now! Thank you all for listening!

Meriweather, pre TMJ, I loved plain m and m's! So good. Yay that this question brought you cheer to think of your grandson.

Thanks so much for your kind words, Lynxstch! I sure appreciate you! As we (all of us on here--we :)) have talked about the QOTD both help keep us connected and this thread stay active, both so important to me! This thread and all of you truly are dear to me and thank you for making a difference in my life and that of so many others as well. ETA: I would love to see a picture of your Patriotic beanie babies :)

To everyone, please always, anytime, feel free to ask away a QOTD! I was thinking the other day I should go look at my Scattergory lists for some possible ideas :)

So grateful also this Sunday for:

A quiet day especially after a horribly fire-cracker-y night :(
Feeling better from time of month
Memories of days past and extra looking forward to brighter times ahead, including meeting all of you at Minnie's one day

QOTD: Bomb pops, of course! I swear they used to be bigger, though. Also, I remember when Icees had blue raspberry and white cherry options. Loved those. Usually get a coke slushie now, sometimes layered with cherry; or a Mountain Dew one.

QOTD2: Lately, not much.

I remember watching Lawrence Welk, because my dad and my grandpa liked it. I had to tolerate it, because the Muppets came on after it ended!

DGS and DD#2 come back from her friends house tomorrow (they went over on Saturday to celebrate the 4th with them, and to give us just a smidge of space).

Did my monthly grocery shopping; will just need veggies (frozen and fresh), lunches and perishables (milk, cream, buns, etc) for the month. Hid a box of Ding Dongs, since the men in this house ate all my Swiss cake rolls last time I went shopping. You would think they would be happy with their boxes of Oatmeal creme pies and Nutty bars, but no. DH got used to not having HLC in the house (high level crazy; his code for when Mother Nature calls) and forgot that it still happens on rare occasions, and that I must have my chocolate goodies. 🍫 🧁🎂

In other news, DS watched Hamilton (before the rest of us had a chance to, no less), and he loved it. My 16 year old is full of surprises and contridictions. I love watching him grow into his own; I never know what he is going to do from one day to the next.

Pea-n-me, my kids had what kinds of toys they wanted; I'm sorry you didn't get a racetrack. My girls had trucks and hot wheels and the boy had a baby doll. My DGSs have baby dolls and kitchen and cleaning sets to go with their trucks and racetracks. My MIL, though, once told DH that our then 1 year old daughter wasn't supposed to play with cars because it would make her 'funny'. (Funny was her word for non-heterosexual, encompassing all LGBTQ people) :rolleyes2 Ignorant comments from an ignorant woman.

Happy Sunday everyone.

QOTD #1 for today the 5th of July: What are your favorite red, white, and blue treats.

QOTD #2 for July 5th: Who (or what) makes you smile when you think of these colors red, white, and blue.

My answers: All three colors together, of course, I think of my country, USA, and give great thanks to all who have and are serving along with their families. My Grandma was always very Patriotic and proud of it. So is a sweet friend now named Shirley. As I grow older being Patriotic means more to me, too :)

QOTD #1: My very favorite "white" treat is sweet vanilla frozen yogurt with hot fudge from a local yogurt place near my church. At Disneyland, when it was so hot, I liked a blue raspberry icee type drink from a small section in Coke Corner. For red....that is harder...maybe thinly sliced fresh strawberries sprinkled with a dash of either white or brown sugar.

QOTD #2: I give God great thanks for joy from all these colors. The color red makes me smile to think of Christmas and Valentine's Day, two days, all about Love. Champ's fur was mostly white and so he will forever be extra in my heart when thinking of being touched by something (a furry someone :)) mostly white. Finally, blue, brings to my mind my beloved church campers, especially the younger kids, who went crazy for blue otter pops!
Fireworks were HORRIBLE here yesterday too and they are ALL illegal here since we live in the DRY desert. :sad2: We have some every year, but this year its been over the top. In fact, it's 11pm here right now and I can still hear some going off...not as many as last night but still ridiculous. My poor dogs were freaking out and they usually aren't too bothered by them. They slept in our room with the door closed and my white noise machine going on all night, I usually set the timer for an hour or so.

Our company will be leaving tomorrow....its been great visiting but I'll also be happy to have our house to ourselves again....tired of feeling like I'm running a B&B.:rolleyes1 We weren't expecting them until Wed last week and they ended up getting here Monday so they are leaving sooner than we expected, and hubby will still have 2 days off we can enjoy together after they leave.

Now onto the questions....
Favorite red, white and blue treats....our family used to get this cake for our family July birthday party....it was a white layered cake with whipped cream frosting and fresh strawberries and blueberries in between the layers. OmG it was so yummy. I keep saying I'm going to try to make it just haven't done it yet.

Red, white and blue doesn't really make me think of anyone or anything special. I used to decorate our home with Americana stuff when hubby was in the Marines so I guess it does bring back memories of our life back then. :lovestruc

Don't ever hesitate to use the "Report" button (bottom left corner) if you find a post to be offensive, attacking someone, using profanity, etc. The mods will see the reports and investigate accordingly. Careful reporting can help keep the boards from turning into another FB. And I agree that this thread is an oasis and a refuge -- thank you to everyone here for your kindness and generosity toward each other!

I keep forgetting to mention Lawrence Welk memories here as well - my grandfather loved him, so I'd watch it, too, when I was very little. Did they show ballroom dancers? I vaguely remember watching people dance and enjoying the ladies in their fancy dresses.

I got very busy here after I posted on Saturday! We had Chinese for dinner - and my argument for that is that we celebrate the holiday with fireworks, which were invented by the Chinese, so why not enjoy their food as well ;) Then we watched the Lego Movie. By that time, it was 8 p.m. (past Josh's bedtime), and we went outside to wait for sundown. While we waited, my mom video-called us on Google Duo - so much easier than having to schedule a Zoom meeting! Unfortunately I got to see my aunt that way. She sounds like her normal self, but she's all puffy and bald, except for a few wispy strands of grey-ish/white hair on top. I cried so hard when we hung up. My heart hurts. But anyway, it got dark, and Josh had fun playing with the light-up rocket copters (basically little plastic "rockets" that you send up with a slingshot - no fireworks). Actually, I think DH had more fun than Josh did! Then we came inside, Josh had a red white and blue bomb pop, and we FINALLY got him to bed. Very late.

Yesterday he and DH built the "Best Dad" trophy that he gave him for Father's Day. DH took it to work this morning to put on his desk. Then we went to my in-laws' house for a combined birthday party for our nieces. Everyone was there, even my SIL's parents, sister, and niece (not actually related to us, but they are still considered Josh's "Nana and Papa," aunt, and cousin). Nana is now a 2-time cancer survivor - some years back she had one type of cancer and kicked that. Last year she was diagnosed with lung cancer, but she's completed her chemo and is in remission right now. She looked a bit pale and her hair was very thin, but overall she looked and sounded good. She did great in the heat! Papa has lung problems from a lifetime of working with asbestos, so he had to wear his mask the whole time, but he also did fine. Josh had fun squirting his cousins with the hose. He loves them so much and I'm very grateful that they don't mind playing with him (and I told them that).

So the questions now...

QOTD #1 for today the 5th of July: What are your favorite red, white, and blue treats.

QOTD #2 for July 5th: Who (or what) makes you smile when you think of these colors red, white, and blue.
#1: I don't know that I have a favorite treat that is specifically red white and blue. I love walking into the grocery store and seeing the table full of cupcakes and sugar cookies, all frosted in patriotic colors (usually with sprinkles, too) (but I don't buy them because we just don't need that kind of stuff in the house. Except for Josh, we're all chunky enough). For Memorial Day, I made a cream pie using Cap'n Crunch Crunchberries as the crust, and I put strawberries and blueberries on top. I do like angel food cake with whipped cream and berries, too.
#2: I immediately think of my grandfather when I think of patriotic colors together. He was a Marine...he dropped out of school at age 17 to enlist, and he was stationed at Iwo Jima during WWII. I don't know if he actually saw the raising of the flag on Mt. Suribachi, though (like in the photograph). He passed away on Christmas Eve 1998, and I have his flag in a display case in my front hallway right now, with a music box with the Marines symbol, and a framed lyric sheet of the Marine Corps Hymn.
I liked my Chrissy, too, with the hair that “grew”.
I remember these 2 dolls. I had a Chrissy doll and loved the hair. Good memories!
I SO wanted a Chrissy doll, but I was just ever so slightly too young for them! I had an issue of "Doll World" magazine that had a huge article about them, and I read that article back and forth so many times. When I visited my father every summer for a month, and got dragged to garage sale after garage sale every day, I convinced my grandmother to buy me a Velvet doll (Chrissy's little sister) that had the front of her hair cut off, and her growing hair was all matted, but it still worked. We also found a Chrissy hair salon at another sale in a different year. I washed Velvet's hair and detangled it the best I could. But the last time I saw my father, when I was 14, Velvet was nowhere to be found in the house...I think they threw everything away :(

Oh no! This thread was a ways down on page two, that will never do!

AuntieMe3, paws and hugs to your dogs. The fireworks as I have shared were just terrible here. Last night there were a few but thankfully nothing like the 4th. Enjoy some days off with your husband and thank him please for his service :)

Always great to see you stopping by here, Luckyrabbit! :)

Apirateslifeforme, hugs on your Aunt . I'm sorry :( Keeping her in prayer. On brighter news, so glad Josh had safe fun on the 4th even if it was late :) How fun that he and his dad built that trophy together, a great memory for them both. Hugs, too on the loss of your Grandpa and I also thank him for his service. Those treats are tempting aren't they? They also are usually placed right as you enter the store, too! I admit to not being familiar with Lawrence Welk or Chrissy or Velvet dolls. I am sure sorry yours got tossed, how terrible :(

It's warming up here. Keep cool, well, and always faith, everyone!

QUESTION of the DAY: Are you a morning person or a night owl?? Have you always been this way? What about others in your family??

So I used to be a total night owl and LOVED to sleep in(when I could). I'm noticing though, the older I get the earlier I've been waking up no matter how late I go to bed and I don't like it. LOL My hubby is a morning person, a too early morning person , we always say if he's awake, everyone is awake(and it's annoying....lol). Our daughter has always been a complete night owl, she actually LOVES sleep so if she can sleep, she's doing it. She slept all night from the day she came home from the hospital. 🥰 She can adjust her schedule for work but on weekend and days off she's a sleeper.

We are morning people, it's no fun for us to stay up late, like torture! That's why we finally sprung for a few night at BLT park view last year!!! We figured we might as well stay up and actually see the fireworks at least ONCE in 27 years of going to WDW :rotfl2: and yeah, we were both already dressed for bed on the balcony. That was late for us....although, now that I think about it we have made a Illuminations showing once or twice when staying over there.
