We're going to DL for 5 days in September. PVI for the bunk bed room is $663 (not including tax).

Paradise Pier is quoted at $1500.00 (not sure about the tax)
&
DL Hotel is quoted at $1710.00 (again not sure about the tax)

Location is important to us... but not extremely. Do you think it's worth the extra $1,000 to stay on-site?

This may sound silly, but it's been over 10 years since my last Disney trip... aren't PP and DL Hotel at the far end of DTD? Would it be a closer walk to the park to stay at PVI?

We used to stay off site but now only will stay on site. You will find a number of people who would rather have the money in their pockets. Good luck with your decision.

If I could afford it, I would stay on site. I love having the Magic Mornings (Sat, Sun, Tues, Thur), the cool Mickey Mouse Shampoo bottles, the Princess bedtime story on TV, and other little things. Since I am hoping, and scraping every penny together, I am trying to make a trip or two happen this year, and that means, staying off site. I check the prices through Getaway Today, Costco, and even the hotels themselves!
I would suggest to make a list of what is most important to you (Magic Mornings, short walk to park, character meal, etc) and see how much it would take to make it happen and stay inside of your budget.
Good luck to you! :thumbsup2

In terms of proximity to the entrances to Disneyland and California Adventure, the closest hotel is the Grand Californian, which has its own entrance to DCA. Next closest are those just across Harbor Blvd: Tropicana, Park Vue, etc. You're right that PP and DLH are at the far end of DTD and unless you take the monorail (which itself is at the far end of DL itself in Tomorrowland), they are quite a hike.

We own at DVC, specifically so that we can have the close proximity.

PVI would be closer to the parks than the DLH & PPH ~ what about a split stay, start either on or off site and then switch *make sure you take advantage of MMs* I'd start off site 1st and then after we used our PH MM I'd switch to on site for a night or 2 *we've done this several times. My fave of the 3 is the DLH!

I know PVI is closer, but I don't think it's all that closer. You still have to walk through the tram area to the esplanade.

I personally think the perks of staying onsite are a huge benefit if you can afford it. With a 5 day stay you could have magic morning every morning it is offered whild you're there, instead of one like you get with a regular parkhopper ticket. I also like being immersed in Disney. Much nicer to walk through DTD then to cross harbour, IMO.
