I apologize if this topic has been previously addressed- My husband and I are considering purchasing resale DVC, but I am aware of the new restrictions imposed in March 2011, where we would not be eligible to use these points toward reservations in the Disney Collection, Concierge Collection or Adventurer Collection.
If we did buy resale, but then added points directly through Disney, would we then be able to take advantage of the Disney Collection, Concierge Collection or Adventure Collection?
Thank you!

only those points which you purchased directly from disney could would be unrestricted in their use

Thank you for responding. That stinks!

I hear ya, but keep in mind that in many instances the use of dVC points for things like cruises and the like will cost you more than if you just paid cash for them...so some don't look at this as a great loss. Even just staying on property at WDW using points at a non dvc resort - the amount of points your charged ends up giving you a very high cost per night, one much higher than you'd likely find using a AP discount.

All good points to consider. Thank you again. Could you tell me what "AP Discount" is? I apologize- I am a newbie!

AP = Annual Pass. DVC members get a discount on annual passes for members of their household. AP holders are sometimes eligible for discounted cash rates at Disney resorts.

Sorry to butt in, but does this mean that the ideal strategy is to buy an AP pass, then use it to book nights at Disney resorts? I'm assuming this is if you can't use your points for the lodging for some reason.

Yes, some people do this. I am considering it for a quick December trip because we have used so many of our points for already scheduled trips and because DVC rooms that can be booked using points are already full.

The other very important thing to remember about the "benefits" retained by direct purchasers is that NONE of them are guaranteed to direct purchasers either.

Disney could take those options away from direct purchasers with a stroke of a pen, just like they did with resale.

Also as a newbie you need to understand that those Collections are not always available and are limited in the number of reservations offered to DVC Members. They can also be taken away at any time. It really is a advertising gimmick used by Disney to sell timeshares. It's like a car dealer advertising a bunch of cars with super discounted prices. When you go to check them out, they are all sold or are stripped down.

DVC can save you some money, and that is really what we are talking about here, but only at the DVC resorts and only if you are currently vacationing at the locations where the DVC resorts are located every year or two and you plan on doing so for 10 to 50 years.

keep in mind also that should you buy resale OKW pts for $50 per pt and then add on direct OKW pts at $100 per pt - and later need to sell due to changes in your circumstances - you will be selling both contracts at resale prices less commissions.

AP Discounts for rooms come and go and may not be there when you want a room.

The current discounts are for these dates only:

Passholders, save on stays at select Disney Resort Hotels when you book through December 24, 2011 for stays most nights October 3 to November 22, 2011 and November 26 to December 24, 2011.

So if you plan on traveling around the holidays, there aren't any discounts.

If you plan two trips within 12 months of each other (like October 2011 and September 2012), you don't need to buy any additional tickets. You just use your AP instead of getting two 7 or 8 day park hopper tickets. And you can get the discounts that come to AP holder like for entertainment, dining and shopping.
