PTR - DCL Take 2: Pappy, Poppi, Pippi, and Peppi Try Again: 7-Day Western Caribbean

Pre-Trip Report – Luggage

Pappy and Poppi have small duffle bags that they usually pack for short trips while Pippi and Peppi use backpacks. Poppi decides that they will need more space to pack for the cruise plus the pre- and post- hotel stays. Pappy suggests their large hard-sided suitcase but Poppi wants something that will easily fit under the stateroom bed and be out of the way. With a little online research, Poppi finds the perfect solution: 32” collapsible rolling duffle from Walmart.com for $14. Poppi likes it so much that she decides to buy a second one.

COST: $14 per bag plus tax

TOTAL: $31

Pre-Trip Report – Disney Rewards

Pappy and Poppi both have a Disney Visa credit card. Whenever they have a Disney trip planned, they begin to use this card exclusively to build up reward points. This cruise trip was planned on relatively short notice so Pappy and Poppi only have about 4 months to accrue points. If only they had planned further ahead, Poppi frets. The points will be moved onto their reward card shortly before the cruise and used to defray costs of their planned excursions.

COST: $0

Pre-Trip Report – Door Decorations

Pippi and Pappy have excellent mental maps and innate senses of direction. Peppi and Poppi, on the other hand, can get lost in a restaurant returning from a visit to the restroom. They would place large painted arrows directing them around the ship if it were allowed. So, Peppi and Poppi decide that the least they can do is decorate their stateroom door to make it easier to find amid the sea of identical doors. They get lots of wonderful ideas from various DIS threads and Peppi starts to draw and color some ears and hats to place around the circular stateroom number. Peppi then covers the drawings with clear tape and attaches magnets to the back. Poppi, who has no artistic ability, decides to slap Disney stickers onto the many free advertising magnets that they have collected over time, and cut them out. Simple, effective, and free.

COST: $0

Pre-Trip Report – 90-Day Check-In Window

Poppi was excited that her 90-day window for checking in online had finally arrived. Although she is normally an early to bed and early to rise individual, she enlisted Pappy’s help in staying awake until midnight so that she could sign the family up for excursions as soon as possible.

Poppi had discussed possible excursions with Pappy a few weeks ago and he was content to let Poppi pick and choose. Pappy didn’t even care if he did any excursions at all. Peppi really liked the idea of feeding stingrays at Castaway Cay and Pippi thought the Nautilus Undersea Tour at Grand Cayman sounded neat. Poppi initially wanted to do the Cozumel Highlights and Mayan Ruins but decided that the 4.5 hour tour would be too tiring on a day when the family wanted to participate in the late Pirate Party.

On-line registration went very smoothly and availability seemed wide open. Poppi successfully signed up for the first-of-the-day Castaway Cay Stingray Encounter and also for the Grand Cayman Nautilus Undersea Tour. Just for fun, Poppi also looked at the Palo openings and the Spa choices. Again, everything seemed to be available.

As often reported by other cruisers, the online check-in was not available at midnight. Poppi certainly wasn’t going to try to stay awake until 3 am, when it reportedly opens. Instead, she awoke at 7:30 am the next morning to check-in online. The process was longer and more involved than she was expecting but she had the family’s passports and a credit card at hand and was able to complete all of the necessary check-in questions. Near the end of the process, she was able to choose the 11:00 to 11:30 am terminal check-in time. Yay for Poppi!

COST: $43 each for Nautilus Tour and $35 each for Stingray Encounter

TOTAL: $312

Pre-Trip Report – The Cruise Contract

As part of the online check-in process, Poppi had to read and accept the cruise contract. Poppi is not a lawyer but she insists on actually reading these things. She understands that DCL is attempting to limit their liability and was understanding of most of the contract terms. However, a few items had Poppi tilting her head and quirking her right eyebrow. Like this part:

THE CARRIER DOES NOT EXPRESSLY OR IMPLIEDLY WARRANT, AND SPECIFICALLY DISCLAIMS ANY WARRANTY AS TO, (a) THE FITNESS, CONDITION OR SEAWORTHINESS OF THE VESSEL

Really?!? DCL won’t expressly warrant the seaworthiness of the vessel? Yikes! The same section continues…

AND (b) THE FITNESS, CONDITION OR MERCHANTABILITY OF ANY FOOD OR DRINK PROVIDED ON BOARD THE VESSEL. THE CARRIER SHALL NOT BE STRICTLY LIABLE IN TORT FOR ANY DEFECT, LACK OF FITNESS, IMPURITY OR CONTAMINATION OF ANY FOOD OR DRINK PROVIDED ON BOARD THE VESSEL.

Wow! So the ship may not float and the food may be impure or contaminated BUT the guest can’t hold that against the company because you agreed to it in the contract. It gets even better though in this part:

…THE CARRIER…FOR ANY REASON WHATSOEVER…THE GUEST AND HIS PROPERTY MAY BE LANDED AT THE PORT OF EMBARKATION OR AT ANY PORT OR PLACE AT WHICH THE VESSEL MAY CALL; AND IN THAT EVENT, THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CARRIER SHALL CEASE AND THIS CRUISE CONTRACT SHALL BE DEEMED TO HAVE BEEN FULLY PERFORMED.

In other words, Poppi and family may not even get the chance to cruise a ship that may or may not float and eat food that may or may not be contaminated because the carrier may decide for any reason whatsoever just to put them off the boat and consider the contract fully performed!

Poppi carefully considered the ramifications of the terms and conditions in the contract and then clicked “Accept”. She’s not going to let such legalese discourage her from cruising! However, she will insist that the family actually try on the life jackets in the stateroom and she may be sniffing her meals a bit more than etiquette allows.

COST: $0 (barring any ship sinking, stomach pumping, or forced disembarking)

That is too funny!!! I wonder why they had to include such things in the contract, hopefully no actual problems like these have occurred in the past... (Please tell Poppi she's not alone, I also read everything :)

So glad you were able to get what you wanted booked, did you decide to skip Palo? or keep it for another cruise?

Thanks so much for updates!

So glad you were able to get what you wanted booked, did you decide to skip Palo? or keep it for another cruise?

We decided not to do Palo for a couple reasons. First, there is more food than we will ever be able to eat already included in the cruise. Why pay more? Second, I'm actually looking forward to all the different main dining rooms and menus. I considered Palo brunch but then remembered the Lumiere's is offering a couple brunches during the cruise. I know, from all the Palo reviews, that the food isn't on the same level but we are not difficult to please and are not used to high end restaurants. So, we won't really know what we are missing.

Thank you very much for the tip on the DCL Passporter. Hadn't heard of it, just reviewed the sample 45 page pdf download and ordered the delux starter kit :)

Really appriciate this forum and all those who take time to provide input to this community :)

Cheers,
Eric

Pre-Trip Report – The Rules

After the 90-day check-in, Poppi didn’t have much left to do in preparation for the cruise. She re-read her Disney cruise line guidebook, browsed the DIS, and enjoyed the trip reports of other cruisers. She also pondered just how much freedom she should give Pippi and Peppi on the ship. She found a few different lists of rules that parents have used for their teens and pre-teens and used them as a guide to create her own rules. The following is what she came up with:

The Rules

The overall objectives of the rules are to stay safe while having fun and to be courteous to others on the ship.

Safety

Under no circumstances are you to go to anybody’s cabin nor is anybody allowed to come to ours. If you are with a new friend and they want to retrieve something from their cabin, you are to wait for them in a public area.

You will not roam or travel through any of the stateroom decks. There is no reason for you to be in any of these locations except to return to your own cabin.

Never accompany crewmembers into non-public areas. There is no reason for you to enter a crewmember area.

If you are in our cabin alone or the 2 of you together, you will be required to have the Do Not Disturb sign posted. Do not open to door to anyone - we will have keys. Not even crew members (like the room steward) are to be in there when you are by yourselves. If the room steward enters, ask him/her to come back later. If they do not immediately leave, you leave and go to Guest Services and call us from there.

You will not accept a drink of any kind from anybody other than a family member or one that you have gotten yourself from the drink station or have ordered and is brought to you by cruise ship staff. This sounds paranoid but folks have been known to drop drugs into someone’s drink and your safety is our utmost concern. For this same reason, do not leave your drink unattended.

During the day, you are allowed to attend activities at the Edge/Vibe, spend time in the stateroom, or spend time in the public areas of the ship. We expect to know where you are on the ship. You will be required to check in and tell us where you are going, what you will be doing and who you will be with.

At night, you must be with a parent or in the stateroom if you are not at an organized activity at the Edge/Vibe. There will be no roaming alone or with friends after dinnertime. If attending a late night Edge/Vibe activity, you are to notify us at its conclusion so that one of us can escort you from the activity back to the cabin.

Washing your hands well and frequently is the best way to stay healthy on a cruise ship. At a minimum, wash after every trip to the restroom; before every drink, snack and meal; and upon returning to the stateroom.

Courtesy

We expect you to be well mannered at all times - use please, thank you, and excuse me. Hold the doors for others that are passing through at the same time as you, allow people to get off of the elevator before you step on, etc.

Basic good behavior applies. No pushing, yelling or cursing in public areas. No cutting in lines, shouting in the halls or throwing anything. No running on the ship with the only possible exception being jogging laps on Deck 4. No splashing or jumping in the pool.

You are not to loiter/hangout or play in the stairwells, hallways, or elevators. This blocks access to other cruises and there are plenty of other public areas to hang out.

You should know that some kids find activities such as “knock and run,” calling other cabins to hang up, or moving/removing items from cabin doors to be fun and harmless. They are neither and will not be tolerated.

You are judged by the company you keep. If you find yourself in the company of others who are breaking our rules, you are expected to leave. If serious shenanigans are going on (any property damage or harassment of an individual), you are to report it immediately to us and/or cruise staff.

Treat the ship crew members with respect. They are there to make your cruise enjoyable, do not make it miserable for them.

Miscellaneous

You will be expected to join us for dinner. We have early seating (5:45 pm) so you will be required to be back to the cabin and ready to go by 5:30 pm. Make sure you allow enough time to get ready. We can be flexible if there is an Edge/Vibe activity you would prefer to attend as long as we have discussed it in advance.

Your Key to the World card is tied to our credit card. It is to be used only by you. You may not buy other people drinks, snacks, arcade games, or souvenirs. You will be expected to reimburse us for any charges you make.

The Wave Phone does not cost us anything to use. However, there is a $250 charge for lost or damaged Wave Phones. Keep your Wave Phone in a safe place at all times. Do not set it down anywhere and do not get it near water as it is reportedly very sensitive to moisture.

Great PTR!

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the rules for your teen and preteen. I'm on your cruise with a 14 and 12 year old and we've been discussing rules. Just copied yours to use as a template. THANKS!:thumbsup2

You guys have less than two months to go :banana::banana:

Poppi is not alone in re-reading the cruise book. I feel like I've investigated everything possible and am now waiting....

Thanks! Make free use of the rules; change them to suit your family. I started with lists off a couple different cruise boards and made some changes.

My DDs will be "just turned 15" and "almost 12" on the cruise so pretty close in age to your children.

Let me know if you think of any important rules that I missed!

Peg

Exactly! I've done what needs to be done and researched what needs to be known. Now I'm getting antsy.

At least the weeks seem to be flying past!

No rush on the TR, but how was the trip? I hope you guys have a fabulous time!
