Can someone tell me what the pros & cons of going in May are?

Crowds??? Weather???? etc....

Thanks,
Kari

Hi Kari,

At the beginning of May crowds are very light and weather is warm but not too hot.

As you get to the end of May, schools are starting to let out for the summer. that combined with Memorial Day means that crowds will start getting heavier. Weather will also get hotter.

When we went in early May it was HOT and humid. Crowds weren't too awfully bad, but they did have lots of school field trips there.

We went the 1st 2 weeks of May last year, 2005.

When we arrived, the area was damp from rain and it was a bit nippy. It rained a little bit. Actually, this was kind of nice because it wasn't blazing hot.

Over the course of the 2 weeks, the temps heated up. It didn't seem to get too humid. But, then again, I'm from Memphis and our humidity is awful so I'm probably immune to Orlando humidity.

Crowd-wise, it was great! We didn't realize that our trip coincided with the 50th Anniversary kickoff party. When I found out I thought we had made a mistake. Not so in the least.

Wait-time was never more than 10 minutes except for a couple of rides on Friday or Saturday. We even were able to ride some rides back-to-back.

As mentioned previously, there were several school groups at the parks. I guess it was end-of-the-year class trips. They were very noticeable at the park entrance but not so much inside the parks.

Overall, I come up with the following:

WDW in May
----------------------------------
Pros

  • Great weather!
  • Small crowds!
  • You're at Walt Disney World!

Cons
  • We missed the 1st 2 weeks of Memphis In May International Festival, a month-long series of events that honors a foriegn county each year. But I don't think that would necessarily translate into a Con for you. ;)

We always go the first or second of May. The crowds are very manageable. The weather is usually nice with hardly any rain. The only downside of going in May I think is that the parks aren't open as late as they are during the holidays or in peak season. That's why we were happy that DW started their extra magic hrs in the evening so we could stay at least at one park later than 9pm. We aren't early risers so staying out late at the parks is something we love to do!! :cool1:

I was there with a hoard of college/HS kids last year from May 20 to June 4 ish... The first week was very quiet. Wet weather. The weather got wetter, and it was some of the heaviest rain I have ever been in the last week. While it did get more crowded it was never to bad. Except over at MGM, but that was due to Starwars Weekend stuff. And even then it was still nicer then July/Aug!

We have been going down there May and Oct or Dec for a few years now. And while the weather last May was the worst I have have ever had down there it was still great to be at the parks. And who knows how the weather will be this year?

We will be going back then also.

Last year, during the middle two weeks of May, it couldn't have been more perfect! The weather was hot a few days, but always warm enough to swim at night. The parks were open later than when we'd gone during Value Season before and were open super-late on EMH days. We noticed by the middle of the second week, crowds picked up dramatically. I would guess it wasn't nearly as crowded as other times, but there was a noticeable difference.
All in all, we loved it and are doing the same thing this year...also because DS is a big Star Wars fan and one Star Wars weekend wasn't enough! :goodvibes

low rain, low humidity, low crowds and warm to hot temperatures!

2 years in a row we had cold, wet weather so I wouldnt put all my chips on sunny and hot! ::yes::

We went in May for the 1st time last year & we really enjoyed it. :)

We enjoyed perfect weather - warm enough for swimming, but not too humid in the parks. I don't think we saw a drop of rain on our 11 day trip. :sunny:

We enjoyed the Flower & Garden Festival at Epcot - it was something new & fun for us to check out! :flower:

We also had a blast attending MGM one day during Star Wars Weekends - another new thing for us. ::yes::

The crowds were pretty low thru the week, but heavier on the weekends. It was more crowded than we were used to, but we usually go in January or September when crowds are much lower. We went in May to celebrate our anniversary & will definitely return sometime in the future in May again! :)
