Projects For Your Home

Thanks for the replies.

I think I need some help.lol

Below is what I have been tipping.

Which should definitely be tipped, which is acceptable either tipping or not tipping and which should definitely not be tipped?

I tipped the guy who pressure washed the driveway $50.

I tipped the 2 guys who pumped the Septic Tank $50 each.

I tipped a Painter who did some outside painting IN THE TERRIBLE HEAT $100.

I tipped the guy who replaced the AC motor on an emergency basis $100.

I tipped the gutter cleaner guy $50.

I tipped the 2 guys who delivered and hooked up the new Fridge $50 each.

I tipped the plumber $50 for fixing the shower.

I tipped the guy who pressure washed the windows and house $50.

Thanks for any opinions.

I don't mind tipping, but if it is perfectly acceptable to not tip,I don't mind that either!

I am not cheap,just thrifty!lol

The only people on that list I *might* have tipped would have been the painter who was painting outside in the extreme heat ($50 tops) and the guys who delivered the fridge (assuming they're working for a 3rd party delivery service and not the actual store you bought the refrigerator from), but I wouldn't have tipped them more than $10 each. As for the guy who repaired the a/c on an emergency basis...if he was the owner of the business and *did not* charge an extra fee for emergency repair (which most appliance/system repair places seem to do), I might have tipped him a little bit.

I don't think you need to tip anyone who you hired to do a specific job, they get paid by their company and the price they charged should include their labor. IF you ask someone to do something over & above what they were hired to do, then a tip might be reasonable. If for example you bought a new refrigerator and part of the job is to haul away the old one (and that is what you paid for), I don't see any reason to tip for that.

Some companies may have policies that prevent workers from being tipped and likely they will let you know if they can't accept it. If you have any of these people on a regular basis doing repetitive/recurring work.............are you creating a situation where they will EXPECT you to tip each time they do whatever job you hired them to do?

Assuming you are hiring a reputable legit company, these folks are all making a very good wage. The only time I ever tipped was when I called up our local plumbing shop (we live in a small town and the place has done work for us before) because DH was out of town and the pipe on the sump pump came loose and water was spraying out. It was towards the end of their work day and the guy stopped on his way home to fix it, as he took his work truck home. He was in and out in under 10 mins and he didn't charge me for it. I gave him $50 for his time. He seemed very appreciative of that.

I always tip the furniture and appliance delivery guys but that's because my driveway is a steep hill and they cannot get their trucks up my driveway so they have to carry the stuff up the hill and that part sucks!!!

I have my own lawn care business and I am very gracious when customers offer me Gatorade/Powerade or a nice cold bottle of water.

I keep plenty in the truck but sometimes I'm trying to make the decision between wasting time going back to the truck to grab a bottle or just wait until I'm finished with the job. You don't really have this issue with the little yards but offering the lawn care people something cold to drink can be a life and time saver if you have a multi acre yard or you see that their truck is a good distance from your yard.

As far as tipping for lawn care services, I would never expect a tip and I set my prices so that I can be profitable I do, however, have people tip under special circumstance. For instance, I have a couple of customers that like me to come out and beautify the yard a couple of days before Thanksgiving and Christmas. This is out of season for lawn care in my area and, for some reason, the customers feel it necessary to tip me for asking me to come out during that time of year. I didn't mind coming out at all but I've also learned that some people take it personal if you try to refuse a tip, so I just accept it now

Nope. Never even thought of it, to be honest. We have gone thru two big remodeling projects since we have lived here (12 years). The first about 8 years ago, brought their own microwave to heat food. I would have totally let them use my microwave…

The second crew 3 years ago, not a fan. They brought their dang dog one day! I about lost my 💩. I LOVE dogs, but I don’t want a strange dog in my house that may not be vaccinated, my crazy Labrador my attack… just no! We called our contractor and he was NOT happy. Didn’t happen again, but I was not feeling particularly warm and cozy to them.

Thanks!

It seems like I just can't stop myself from tipping in the moment.lol

I am going to try my best next time!lol :)

Tipping shows your appreciation for a job well done; I tend to tip more so than my husband when it comes to contractors and repair people. That said, my DH owns a business where he works on people’s homes. He prices his jobs fairly, compared to others in his industry, while making enough to cover the costs of business and to make a profit. He doesn’t expect a tip, and appreciates when his customers do it- but it doesn’t impact his pricing or how well he does the job.

What he strives for is repeat business and people who take care of their houses. His regular customers pay a little less due to longevity and the fact that DH knows they are doing regular maintenance. He’ll even do extra stuff for them, especially seniors. Customers who only call with an emergency due to lack of regular maintenance, and customers who are shopping around (and not apt to be regulars) will be quoted higher prices because the job is less desirable. So better than a tip to him is to be a loyal customer that takes care of things.

This is one example, and doesn’t apply with delivery people or crews doing long term projects. But, in the 25 years in business DH hasn’t used a bathroom or eaten food at a customer’s house. He does appreciate the offer of cold water on a hot day.

I tip $10-$20 for certain deliveries and we just gave our appliance repairman $40 because he’s been to our house twice in the past 3 months and didn’t charge us the second time (we had the same problem). I am sure the people you are tipping so generously are grateful!

And our regular customers are out best source of advertisement.

I get more customers from word of mouth than I do anything else and I will always be grateful for that!

I've never provided a meal or tip for a worker that was doing a house project. I will leave a cooler filled with ice and water and offer use of the bathroom.
