Procdure of Transferring Points

I understand that in theory, points transferred in retain their home resort and UY, but I read somewhere that in practice, the DVC computers can't distinguish between your home points and the transferred in points, and considers them all your home points with your UY.

Is that still the case or are they able to distinguish between the two now?

I have not done a transfer, but from what I have read on the boards recently, the computer does now recognize the home resort and UY of the points. Transferred points won't show up in your online account, but MS can see them when you call.

They fixed that loophole a few years ago.

Yes now the transferred points retain their original year and month and resort.

That is definitely old information. The transferred points will retain their original UY and home resort.

I am trying to learn as much as I can since our offer was just accepted for a sale of 300 SSR points (now going to wait to pass, hopefully, Disney ROFR).

Anyway, can someone type slowly (LOL) and explain exactly what you are asking? Was the OP asking if I needed to "rent" points from somewhere else and the UY was different from my own?

If I need to rent extra points, do I need to be concerned about the renters UY? Does it need to be my UY?
Thank you very much.

I think the OP was asking if it mattered what UY and what resort those transferred points were from because they just became his/her points at that point and MS wouldn't know they originally were from a different resort or UY. Kind of like buying up VB points from a member on a firesale and trying to use them at 11 months out at AKV to get the AKV Concierge or at 11 months out at BLT to get the MK view.

That's how it used to be, but DVC got wise to some commercial renters who bought up large amounts of last minute points for cheap and morphed them into their home resort to get primo booking ability. DVC went back to one transfer in or out each year per membership.

Deb,

Yeah that's pretty much what I was asking. I just need to make sure I am transferring in home points if the 11 month window is important to me.

the OP was asking about a "transfer" of pts, in which one DVC owner calls MS and transfers the rights to a certain number of pts to another DVC owner. if you receive a transfer, you can use the pts however you wish - including calling MS to make or change reservations with those pts.

transferring pts is different than renting pts. if you rent pts, you are actually only renting a reservation. the reservation remains under the control of the other DVC owner (i.e. the rights to the underlying pts are not transferred to the renter). both DVC owners and nonowners may rent, but neither may call MS to even ask about that rented reservation.
