I have always loved sony brand and have had a sony digital camera before, but am having all sorts of problems with the model we just bought.

Most serious -- large white spots on the pictures, almost looks like a water spot or a reflection. The spots are in different places on the various pictures, so it isn't something on the lens. I have only taken indoor pix and the spots are random as far as lighting conditions, etc. For example, I took the same type of picture a number of times with different people in it -- some have the spots and others don't.

Also, some pictures are blurry. Random. No apparent correlation to distance or lighting. The people in one shot are clear and the very next picture is blurry.

Someone told me the spots are very common on a SONY cybershot because the lens is so close to the flash. Is that correct? Does that mean I can do nothing to prevent the spots from ruining what would have been some very nice pix?

I really appreciate any feedback or advice you can provide. Thanks!

Please provide some example pics. The blurry thing just might be you getting used to using the camera.

If you are having doubts, can it still be returned?

Kevin -- I am going to upload the problem pictures tonight and really hope you might be able to provide some guidance. There is a 15% restocking fee to return it to Best Buy, but I am going to explore how that works if the camera is defective. Thanks again for responding. I hope once you see the pix, you might have some advice for me.

the spots could be spectral abborations... you know, ghosts and spirits!
seeing the pics will help guess at the problem.
the random blurry photos sound like camera shake. if you can post those and the EXIF data included in each that will help anylize the problem as well. a shutter speed of only half a second can easily result in camera shake.
something even the $1500 camera owners have to deal with as well.

This website may help with the white spot problem. It is likely just dust or moisture in the air reflecting back at the camera. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orb_(paranormal)

If this is it, the only thing you can do is avoid taking flash pics where there could be dust. That pretty much rules out every indoor location. You are correct that the farther away the flash is to the lens, the better. A more common problem caused by this is red eye.
