For the pennies, it is best to use 1982 and earlier pennies. There is less zinc content in them and you are less likely to get a zinc "smear" on the pressed penny.
My boys love to collect the pressed pennies. We have found that the new "shiny" pennies work best for us. You can see the image much clearer than the older, darker pennies.
I get each boy a roll of quarters and a handful of shiny pennies before we leave home. We have just completely filled up one of our books and bought new books this last trip.
Is there a list as to how many pressed penny locations there are between the parks? Or are they listed in the book? Does the book give locations of the machines? Are the books available anywhere or only at a few stores? thanks!
No, they don't have to be US pennies. You won't be able to use your loonies though. You need two quarters (I'm not sure if the machines will take candian quarters or not....if you're close to the border, it's probably better to just go to a US bank and get $10 worth of US quarters) and a penny.
Personally, I prefer the pre-82 pennies as well. I have one pressed with a later penny, and while it was shiny, the shiny part has worn away and I'm left with the zinc smears.
To get the older pennies brighter, just dunk them in vinegar. I also put salt. The salt doesn't do anything chemically - it just kind of acts like little scrub brushes. It gets those older, darker pennies bright and shiny in no time.
Unfortunately there is not a list of where the machines are. There does seem to be more machines in MK than anywhere else. They are in some nice little hidden locations too. We have fun trying to discover all the places on each trip. The only place in AK I found a machine was in the gift shop right when you enter on the left. Maybe somebody else has noticed other machines and will help us out...........

This keeps up to date locations of penny press machines there are even some sites that show where machines are through out Fl.
If you go to intercot.com, then click on "info central", then "miscellaneous", then "elongated coins" they have a complete listing of the machines for the resorts & parks. I'll try to paste the link below...
Just looked again and this site even list othe places than WDW to get Disney PP's. You can do a search on the Disney Collectors Board and find a lot of info about PP's and how to clean the pre "82 pennies. I clean with auto Rubbing compound then seal them with a clear coat after they are pressed this way they stay shiney.
I'm pretty sure that there is a pressed penny list at www.allearsnet.com. ..........................And the machines are EVERYWHERE!! Just ask my kids. Each child has OVERFILLED a book each trip.......................P
My youngest DD collects the pennies/quarters as well. We just got back a few weeks ago and had a really hard time finding another book. She had filled her first book. We asked EVERYWHERE and they were all sold out. Finally we found out at the "newsstand" just outside the enterance to the MK.. on the left hand side just before you walk under the train station.
That was the only place in the entire park that still had them. Good luck.

I don't have the books in front of me, but I think each book holds 24 pennies and 8 quarters. There are also books for only quarters also. I don't know how many they hold.
