Pressed Pennies question

Pennies should NOT be new:) The date should be before 1982..don't know why, but they turn out much better. I "washed" my nephews before I gave them to him in ketchup, yep, ketchup and they are nice and shiny now:) hope this helps

Ketchup..hmmm..now my days mission is going to find pre 82 pennies and giving them a Ketchup bath...thanks for the tip!

Ketchup..hmmm..now my days mission is going to find pre 82 pennies and giving them a Ketchup bath...thaks for the tip!

I can hear it now...the phone will ring and your little one will answer the phone and say "mommy can't come to the phone she is having a ketchup bath!" oh and if the tag fairy is reading this "giving them a ketchup bath" would be a good one for these ladies! :)

first question....If Ketchup can eat up all those years of residue of those pennies and make them all bright and shinny...do you really wanna eat that stuff??

OH might I add, my DH thought I was crazy and was wondering why I had a plate of ketchup and pennies on the counter. I told him they were having a ketchup bath while I was having my bubble bath...lol

And to my amazement they were sparking and shining after I gave them a rinse! Thanks for that tip!

Back in the Disney pile they go!pirate:

Anymore tips...I have like 25 days left to occupy before my trip...

Make sure you use new pennies. They are shinier than the older ones. We keep them in old film containers and the quarters in others. But they are all over. We have gotten a good collection going. And don't forget the once at the resorts, most people over look them.

Does anyone happen to know how much the penny books cost? My husband makes a point of bringing back pressed pennies and books for my DS when he goes to conferences in various places. I know DS would love to pick up a penny book at WDW when we go.

He's going to have such a hard time choosing which pennies to get while we are there.

They sell them at most all of the hotel gift shops. I think it was either $6.50 or $8.50 but I can't remember exactly. It was worth it to have a place to hold them all and display them.

Thank you! He has a stack of books from other places because they are such a great way to keep everything together. I should really look into something that will hold pressed quarters, too.

Mental note: need to go to the bank and pick up a roll of shiny new pennies!!

Use 1982 or older to avoid the zinc streaks in your penny. The ketchup is definitely the way to go to clean them... I left my in a bowl overnight, then rinsed in warm water. :thumbsup2

I read somewhere that pennies minted after 1982 have more zinc than earlier pennies and when those pennies are pressed, they get kind of dark and grungy looking. I've tried to use 1970's or earlier pennies for pressing. Anybody know if that zinc story is true? Thanks!

Dark and grungy is from age, not the zinc. The zinc shows as silver streaks when the penny is pressed, and can ruin the look of the penny.

One other tip I found very cool: If you press the penny, and the back of the penny is the side the picture imprints, the building shows through and messes up the penny. To avoid this, turn the face side of the penny to the right when putting it in the slot. Perfect penny!

If you don't want quite the mess of ketchup, try a solution of salt and vinegar. The mild acid in vinegar combined with the salt work wonders with removing the oxidation off old pennies. (This is why ketchup works - it contains both salt and vinegar) I just find that the ketchup makes a much bigger mess.

The books now hold 64 pennies? I'll need to get a new one. The last one I bought has "Happiest Celebration on Earth" on it and holds 36 pennies and 6 quarters. It was $6.50.

Does anyone know if there are still quarter books?

Okay--pennies are in their ketchup bath--and now I know why I get acid reflux every time I eat ketchup! :lmao:

One more note about the M&M mini containers. The last 2 years in a row I have been stopped & had my carry on bag searched because of the rolls of M&M penny- quarter rolls.
Last year when I was pulled aside that was the first thing I told them I had in my bag,& that was what they were checking. I guess they don't x-ray good going thru security. It was no problem taking them , just funny that they have hung me up both times since I have been preparing my penny tubes.

I may never eat ketchup again--no wonder it gives me reflux if I haven't taken my aciphex!!!:scared1: I can hardly believe how well it worked on the pennies!

On the other hand, whoa, those pennies were dirty. Even though we know intelectually that they have dirt and germs, seeing the difference when they are "clean" is amazing!

So I think the plan is to eat the two tubes of M&Ms while my old pennies are soaking in ketchup...

And they say planning for a vacation is easy!:rotfl:

What a good trick with the M&M mini tube... and an easy way to take the change - great... guess I need to get some chocolate...

The mini-M&M tube was one of the best tips I found on these boards before we went on our pressed penny hunt last year.

Also, if you run out of change (like we did) the CM's are more than happy to exchange dollars for either pennies or quarters. I found that I had brought enough pennies with me, but didn't want to pack all of those quarters!

they are $.51 - you put in two quarters and a penny.

There are tons of machines around disney. Next time we are going to bringa lot of change with us and try to get way more (only got a few this time!)

We have this big container, looks like a rocket. Well the top cone has a slit so you could use it as a bank. We dump all our change in there. Before I went to the bank I filled 3 mini M&M containers with the quarters and pennies. That helped me keep track of how many i needed, I just stacked them 2 quarters 1 penny, 2 quarters one penny and so on. I wish I could remember how many it held.
