Pressed Pennies question

My M & M holder has room for money to make 20 pressed pennies. So - 40 quarters and 20 pennies.

Oh well, looks like I'm going to have to "force down" a few tubes of M&M's so my kids can have their own tubes to carry around! The things I do for my kids! :rotfl2:

I also filled one tube with just quarters since there are also Quarter presss machines & places for pressed quarters provided in the disney pressed penny books. I think it is 1.25 to press a quarter & that is still a cheep souviner by disney standards

Side note: A show about Disney just came on the History channel at 8:00Am est 3/27/2008

Wow! Thanks for the links and tips. We're taking our DS to Disney for the first time next week and have been setting aside our shiniest pennies. I had no idea how many pressed penny options there were! We're going to need more coins! Happy hunting! ~ducky

Here's our stash - ready for pressing!

YAY~!! I just turned on History channel after reading this! It's half way over but it's great! I love ANY thing Disney! I have io cable and watch the Disney Travel on Demand videos all the time just to get a quick fix!

Mental note: need to go to the bank and pick up a roll of shiny new pennies!!

Someone else might have already posted this, but I didn't see. It's better to use older pennies for pressing, pre-1982. These are solid copper instead of copper plated zinc. They've much less likely to smear.
I spend the whole year collecting pennies from the 70's to use in penny machines.

If you don't want quite the mess of ketchup, try a solution of salt and vinegar. The mild acid in vinegar combined with the salt work wonders with removing the oxidation off old pennies. (This is why ketchup works - it contains both salt and vinegar) I just find that the ketchup makes a much bigger mess.

We used the salt and vinegar solution for our pennies on our last trip and it worked great! We found a bunch of pre 1982 pennies and soaked them overnight and the next day they were nice and shiny. Now, everytime my dd picks up a penny off the ground, she tells me "here's some more money to wash". I'm sure the people around her when she first said it thought we were nuts.

Most shops have a Disney book that has slots to hold the pennies (usually on the counter near the register). It is a nice keepsake. My boys each have one.

I agree, it is great! :thumbsup2

It only cost about $7.00 with tax and it securely holds the pennies (it is four-fold and holds 64 pennies).

The Resorts, DTD, all the WDW Parks, ect... all have penny machines, it's an awesome souvenier! :goodvibes

The books now hold 64 pennies? I'll need to get a new one. The last one I bought has "Happiest Celebration on Earth" on it and holds 36 pennies and 6 quarters. It was $6.50.

Does anyone know if there are still quarter books?

Ours holds 64 pennies, it does NOT hold quarters! Our one lone pressed quarter is taped onto the last pocket! :goodvibes It is wider than the see-through pocket.

It is a four-fold blue book, a bit bigger than a postcard, but less wide than a greeting card. It has Sorcerer Mickey on the front and says "Pressed Coin Collection" and "Where Magic Lives". The price (when we purchased 9/07) was $6.50 and we bought it in the little MK shop that you can look up your family history in.

I LOVE pressed pennies! We try to get the ones with Mickey in different costumes or settings. However, I read somewhere that pennies minted after 1982 have more zinc than earlier pennies and when those pennies are pressed, they get kind of dark and grungy looking. I've tried to use 1970's or earlier pennies for pressing. Anybody know if that zinc story is true? Thanks!

We used both older and newer pennies (as we had never heard to use one or the other before going). DS only pressed 20, but actually (in our case) the newer pennies are the most clear and nicely imprinted of all! Maybe it depends on the age and use of the machine, or simply luck, who knows! :confused3 We have a few of my empty diabetes test strip containers full of (sequential) 2 quarters, 1 penny coins to use on our 2008 trip and they are once again a mixed lot of old and new! :goodvibes

Does anyone happen to know how much the penny books cost? My husband makes a point of bringing back pressed pennies and books for my DS when he goes to conferences in various places. I know DS would love to pick up a penny book at WDW when we go.

He's going to have such a hard time choosing which pennies to get while we are there.

In September 2007, the books cost $6.50 each plus tax and they hold 64 pennies! They are nice and sturdy and are four-fold (so they are not to large)!

Pin trading and Pennies keep my kids busy for hours in the parks! It's like one giant treasure hunt! We love it!
