Prescription Medication

For people posting that they carry their medications in a daily pill case and have never had a problem, this is what I posted in a previous thread "medication in their original containers?" from March of 2023.

"I see in your opening sentence you read the DCL website and it says medications should be in the original containers.
If their is any doubt call Disney Cruise line and get their official answer directly from them, possibility in writing.

Telling someone in authority at the cruise port who is questing the validly of your medication not in their original properly marked bottles/containers that, "people on the internet said they never had a problem" might not go well with them and could cause you to miss your cruise, why take the chance.

Whenever my wife and I travel we always take any medication or vitamins in their original containers to avoid any potential problems. This includes non prescription medications also."

My wife and I will even carry over the counter items like vitamins, aspirin, cold medication and the like in their original containers even if we have to go out and buy small bottles for each just for the cruise.

Not worth taking a chance being delayed and possibly missing the ship over this.

On our last cruise security made my wife open our travel bag with all our medications/vitamins to check out what we were carrying.

This is really good information. Maybe BRING your weekly pill case, but keep the original prescription bottles and then sort them all into your pill case on the first night. I will let my hubby know, so that he doesn't stress out over getting delayed.

I'm on my 11th cruise in 10 years right now. I typically take a pill organizer filled with several pills per day of the organizer, some prescribed, others vitamins. I never bother carrying on the bottles for those daily pills snd I've never had any issue. Same goes for traveling to Canada and Europe. Non-issue.
But are you taking the pill organizer off the ship in foreign ports? That may be the difference.

Never thought about it I have 2 small containers I carry in my purse that has my diabetes pill and Advil in the other . These have been thru so many x ray machines…lol

I can't recall ever needing to do that. I take my pills in the morning. The OP's original post also seemed to indicate that wasn't something she was concerned about, either.

They aren't my pills. My mom takes multiple medications throughout the day for some medical problems. One of which is a pain medication, that is honestly the one I would wonder about. The DCL website doesn't have any information other than bringing them in original bottles, which we were expecting but as others have said the Bahamas isn't super clear.

I'm thinking she may need to ask her doctor. He might have a good resource to check 🤷‍♀️ It's February 2025 so we have plenty of time to check everything.

Really, she wants to be able to go on this trip with us (mostly her grand daughter) while she still feels like she can get around well.

If it's a controlled substance that you're taking into ports then I would take the pills in a prescription bottle just to be on the safe side.

And check the laws for the country/ies you're visiting.

As has been said, some things are simply not legal in other countries regardless of if they're in their original bottle or not.

I was curious myself and couldn't find an answer easily. I understand why you're asking and you'd be surprised at the rules regarding prescription medications and international travel. When I travel, I always have to verify that my migraine and seizure meds are not on a list. I know one of them is for Japan.

And for some countries it isn't even just prescription medications that are an issue. For some countries, some kinds of what are considered OTC medications in the US or Canada are outright prohibited, sometimes with high penalties. Sudafed (the original), Benadryl and some other common meds are some examples. Also in terms of Rx medications, injectibles / syringes are an issue for some countries and may require special documentation or advance approval. Fortunately, most of those countries are not ones DCL normally sails to.

That said, as others have said, if one is traveling with any medications - Rx or OTC - it is important to find out the official information about what is or is not allowed and any specific requirements that apply in terms of packaging or documentation or quantity limits.

If you choose not to bring prescriptions in their original container PLEASE photograph a pill with the original label

You NEVER know when you’d need that information and getting help filling a prescription with a label is a million times easier than I take a red pill for this a blue pill for that when they unexpectedly go missing or damaged

Or if someone else needs to know what you are taking. Knowing I can grab their phone and find the pictures and be able to rattle off exactly what’s taken is so beneficial to medical professionals.
