We were told while you can leave the hose hooked up, don't leave the line to the gray tank open, something to do w/ back gasses or some weird fluke thing that happened to one of his coworkers???

Nah, all the tanks (gray and black) are vented to the roof, just like a house main sewer. Not to say there couldn't be crappy assembly at the joints, but that isn't the norm.

I leave my tanks closed until we are almost ready to leave or until the shower backs up. The main reason is I'm too lazy to crawl on the ground to hook things up.

If I do hook things up before a tank is full, I open the grays and leave the black closed. Then I do like NofMouse, close one of the grays a day or 2 before we leave to flush out the hose after dumping the black.
