My wife and three-year-old daughter went with me to Orlando this past week. I had a seminar held at the Boardwalk, but we stayed at Animal Kingdom Lodge. I could not have been happier with that decision.

I walked around Boardwalk, the Polynesian, and the Wilderness Lodge to compare the facilities. The pools were about the same, but AKL had the nicest playground of the group. Also, AKL had a host of activities (music, animals, adventure, food, story time) that my wife took our daughter to over the three non-theme park days we spent there. Of course the zebras, giraffes, impalas, flamingos, secretary birds, etc. that roam the grounds were a big hit.

Telling fact--three days at the resort and there was enough to keep our three year old busy that she only watched about 30 minutes of TV a day (while mom was showering, etc).

The evening meal at Boma was a little out of our 3 year old's comfort zone, but the breakfast there was excellent. My wife and daughter found enough variety at The Mara for three satisfying lunches.

The room was very spacious for the three of us (four would have been comfortable), and our daughter loved the bunk beds. Nicely decorated for adult tastes, but the animal and African theme was great for the kiddo.

If this had been a "typical" Disney vacation with us at parks each day, I probably would not recommend the extra expense of a deluxe resort. But this was money well spent with my being tied up in a conference for three full days and the ladies staying at the resort.

We just cam back from a stay at the AKV with our 3 and 5 year old boys. They loved seeing all the different animals around the property, the zero entry pool and the play ground. My 5 year old loved the lodge so much that he wanted to part of being in the parks... He kept asking to back to hotel to see the animals from his window and to go in the pool. It was so adorable!

You also can't beat the Mara for quick meals with the kids. Lots o good choices for little ones. :goodvibes

Do you have a sample schedule of the activities? We are thinking of staying there for one night after our cruise and we would be just relaxing at the resort.

I love AKL, we bought a samll add-on to DVC there becuase I know DD 3 and DS 1 will really enjoy it. Trying to decide between AKL and Wl for our upcoming Decemeber trip. Would prefer AKL but WL has the boat service to MK.

This is a big issue for us... so we have decided next trip we would like to split the resorts... 4 nights at VWL, then 4 nights at AKL. We hope we can get that. Our kids really like AKL so we thought better to go there for the second half... They may be upset we have to leave.... We plan to do the MK two of the days we are at WL and AK when we are at the AKL. Other parks in between ;)

Last week we found travelling to ML was not easy from the AKL. :sad2:

I don't have a schedule but I do know there was a camp for kids ages 6-12 on Saturdays and the daily schedule did change daily. We did not actually have our kids do any of the activities except for the night vision thing. At 8:30 each night (time changes depending on time of year) they had an area to view the animals at night. It is really cool to see them in action at night.

Relaxing at the hotel is a great idea. Our friends are going on the Disney Cruise in January and are planning to do two days at the AKL before the cruise with no parks.... either way, I think it is a good idea. The Mara is great for quick food and the pool is wonderful. There is also a really nice playground (one of the best in Disney).

I am undecided for sure, really like VAK. The animals and the 0 depth pool. Right now have a 1 bedroom booked @ the 11 month window and might switch at the 7 to WL..which we like too but it is not quite as special. I thought about splitting our stay too but moving is a hassel.

The animals and pool at AKL are very special... loved that the kids could see all sorts of animals at different locations throughout the day and their ability to go in and out of the pool at will was wonderful. We really loved it there. You will not regret your decision to stay there. Just be prepared for longer travel periods to the parks...

Are you using Disney transportation or a car? We had a car and parking was a hassel at the MK. One day we did eat at Chef Mickey then took the monorail over to MK. That was easy!
