popcorn ceiling removal/asbestos

Anyone have any experience with this? We are buying a home that was built in 1976. Asbestos was banned in 1978. We HATE the popcorn ceilings and want to remove them, but when researching this I realized we may have asbestos and in that case it would be a very pricey, professional removal. We are planning on sending some samples to a lab to find out if there are asbestos present.

Please share your popcorn removal stories (even if not relating to asbestos) and any tips or hints. Thanks!
