..... the vast majority of them (not counting us crazy DIS people, of course), have never heard of DVC. ....

Why it's called "The Best Kept Disney Secret"..;);)

Great thread...love the :scratchin musings, and photos!...

:sunny:

Well I also vote for the rooms to be done SOON and tobe done in Suites. Disney if you are reading this....please have the POP suites up and ready to be used by 2009. :rolleyes1 I'll need one by then; this year I think we can handle your standard room at POP with 5 of us in it.;)

There are a few things that creep me out about those buildings. First off they just look so ghost townish, if that makes any sense. Second, I would hate to be the construction workers that have to go back and work there. I can only imagine the snakes and spiders that have taken up residence around and in those buildings. Florida has some wickedly huge spiders:scared: I hate spiders:scared: . It is hard to imagine that someday those buildings will look as nice as the completed section of POP. It really needs some life and color added to it. I can't wait to see what they do with them!

You do NOT want to venture onto Discovery Island without a good rifle!!

A boat skipper during a Wishes Cruise told us that the last time Disney folks were on the island removing the last of the useable equipment from the buildings they encountered a gator and a VERY large snake. (He was the boat driver that took them over). The place is now 100% totally abandoned. There was a light that was on during the cruise and I asked about it. He said "notice how it is next to the ground". It was your standard street lamp. It had gotten knocked over during the hurricanes and apparently a wire short circuited and that's why it was on. In my two Ft. Wilderness visits since then, I have not seen the light on any more, so they have now totally cut power to the island.

Ok, I have a question. First off, where can you see discovery island from? I would love to take some pics of it if with my zoom lens, don't know where I would go to do that though. And second, is the same thing for River country. How would one get pics of that? Or is it not possible to get close enough being that they are closed. I am not the sneaking into places I'm not supposed to be type. Just think they would make for some great photos. Thanks!:goodvibes

Great questions! I'd love to know the answers, too! :)

Discovery Island - Its smack dab in the middle of the lake - surrounded by Contemporary, Fort Wilderness & Wilderness Lodge. If you look at this picture, you can see Contemp in the back ground, and the MK would be waaaaaaay up in the right hand corner.

And another:

River Country - it in that same lake area....

You can see Contemp in the back ground....and a smidge of Discovery Island on the right hand side of pic, and see Space Mountain?:

So, If I took the boat from the MK would I be able to see any of these things from a distance? Or is there a better way to see them?

we're going to Pop in October, but DH said "no!" to the idea of hopping the fence and "going in" - guess i'm dragging the old telephoto lens, too...

I shouldn't even encourage this behavior.. But you really just have to 'walk' *around* the fence at the north end.

Security is not terribly tight on this... till you're in there.. Then they'll be all over you! I don't recommend it.

Never heard it from me.

Thanks a bundle for "not" shareing that with us. It would be incredibly handy to know, even though we would not even consider doing it. hhhhmmm!

You cant see it fron the boat - the boat would be on the opposite side of the Contemporary....

If you rented water mice, you could swoosh on by and see it.

suzimar57 mine says "NO!" too, dang party poopers!

Man - you DO have party poopin' men!!! Mine will always sneak around with me and has gotten good at playing 'dumb tourist' if necessary!
"I told you this wasnt the way to go!" "I thought it was!!! I didnt know!!!"

::yes::

I took a quick poll... seven members in the family,,, four outright told me "No", one can't talk but two of us are up for staying at the not-so-open section of POP to save on the vacation dollars.

Last time we were down there I "accidently" drove through the open gate of the Vintage Years of POP. Something I highly do not suggest anyone does. There are pipes sticking up out of the concrete pads. Bet they'd do a number on a set of Goodyears.

...sink a little more money into these unfinished units and complete them as Family Suites...

Oh, I keep hoping for this!! I keep checking the boards hoping for posts about the beginning of construction on more family suites at the POP legendary years section!

take the smaller Contemporary boat that also goes to Ft Wilderness and Wilderness Lodge - it goes right around Discovery Island and you can also see River Country from this boat

[Puts on my radio announcer / big guy adult voice]

I would strongly encourage anyone with an interest in any of these areas to honor the posted signs and stay out of the areas they are requesting you to stay out of all together.

These areas are not meant to have visitors and contain hidden hazards, electrical hazards, animal hazards, strange holes in the ground where they are not supposed to be etc.

I took the pictures at the start of this thread from the safety of the 50's parking lot. I peeked thru the fence.. but I didn't go beyond it.

Should you choose to ignore the posted signs, Disney would be within their rights to request you leave their property. For all they know, you could be from a competitive company or who knows what.

Anyway.. That's the last I'll say about that.

Thanks!

Very nicely put! I could not imagine wanting to risk be kicked off property and ruin the rest of my families vacation for foolishness in the first place. While I would love to get close to some of these areas for photos, I would never risk doing anything against the rules. Disney is way too precious to me to be thrown out of. I do however plan on using my telephoto lens and taking some photos from the contempory boat. Thats good enough for me!

LOL...so if you're gonna do it make sure it is the last day of your vacation and not the first.

I AM KIDDING OF COURSE!
