Last year on the mummy, we saw the cm's help a person out of the back seat (as they could not latch it). I felt terrible for them, as they sat there while the cm (a bit over-dramatically) kept forcing and pushing to latch the safety lock. I feel it is a form of discrimination, and should be assessed a bit better when the ride is under construction. Many persons in this country are "large" (and NOT unhealthy merely because of weight). This person did not appear overweight (IMHO), but bulky and large (very tall and strong). It's not the first time I've witnessed this at US (The Flintstone attraction, and Hulk, etc). One time, a woman was very large chested...and they could not get the shoulder harness to clip. She was small everywhere else *(in proportion to her chest), so Dolly Parton would not be able to ride many of these attractions!!
We too, LOVE Universal. But, as another poster mentioned...we have never witnessed this sort of thing at WDW. It seems Walt and the imagineers figured~in the "size" factor...making it comfy/accessible for people of all shapes, etc. to easily *(and comfortably) fit! Walt's mom was not a small woman, perhaps lending to a better sense of understanding in this matter.
As another poster mentioned, I think forcing a lock to close, and "restrict" someone's breathing is dangerous! With all the discrimination in this country, I believe the attitude towards obesity to be the most shameful. I have an older sister whom battles weight (her entire life), while the rest of us experienced little/no problems. She's not very large, but has to struggle to keep every pound off her frame. It has made me much more cognizant and sympathetic towards the matter.
Everyone pays the same amount for a ticket to US, everyone should be able to ride/enjoy each attraction. If not, perhaps the park should offer REDUCED tickets for people of size (since they are limited/restricted from enjoying every attraction). This makes perfect sense, especially since they charge MORE on some airlines for large people to fly. I believe a 25% reduction in the price of a ticket would work! Maybe then, these parks would GET IT TOGETHER.
Until then....have fun, and enjoy every moment.
