Polynesian Kona Coffee

What is Kona Island, the coffee bar? And the cup listed at $2.95, is that the pure 100% kona? Just wondered since it is a dollar more than the price Amy listed. Really, how silly for me to ask such detailed questions about a cup of coffee. :rotfl:

Here is some good and hopeful news on the coffee front for us all.

I highlighted the part were we may get real coffee finally!

Nestlé and The Coca-Cola Co. announced they have reached final agreement on refocusing the activities of their Beverage Partners Worldwide (BPW) joint venture. The agreement, which is subject to certain regulatory approvals and is expected to close by April 30, 2007, is a refined version of an earlier understanding reached in November 2006.

Under the terms of the agreement, BPW will cover the total ready-to-drink tea category worldwide except in the U.S. and Japan. In this connection, Nestlé has licensed its Nestea and Enviga brands to The Coca-Cola Co. in the U.S. and to BPW for the rest of the world. As a result, both companies will be free to develop or acquire additional tea brands to compete on the U.S. and Japanese markets, while BPW will be able to do the same in the rest of the world, to compete with other market players.

As agreed in November 2006, coffee will no longer be part of BPW's business and, consequently, Nescafé ready-to-drink coffee will be returned to Nestlé, and both Nestlé and The Coca-Cola Co. will be free to compete in coffee beverages and non-tea functional beverages worldwide.
"A joint venture focused on the total ready-to-drink tea category, excluding the US and Japan, provides an opportunity to optimize value for all stakeholders," said Leslie Novos, CEO of BPW, in a prepared statement. "The redefined scope affords BPW the opportunity to grow existing and new brands consistent with a leadership agenda outside the US and Japan."

Beverage Partners Worldwide (BPW), a fifty-fifty joint venture held by Nestlé and The Coca-Cola Co., was created in 2001 following a period of 10 years during which Nestlé and The Coca-Cola Co. cooperated in a joint venture called Coca-Cola and Nestlé Refreshments (CCNR).

This is the link to Kona Island's menu at AllEars.net : http://www.allears.net/menu/menu_kcc.htm

This menu is from Sept. 2006. When we were there in November 2007 the large cup was a little more expensive. I think $2.95, but could be mistaken on the exact price (it was over $3 after tax though). The coffe served at Kona Island is a kona coffee blend, not 100% kona coffee.

To people serious about their coffee, these are not silly questions!!

Anything is better than the nescafe!!!:rotfl:

C'mon, the NesCafe is not that bad. Is it great coffee, no, but it is what it is: plain no frills coffee from a liquid concentrate. It will never be gourmet, but I think it is better than many fast food or quick mart brews.:surfweb:

As mentioned there is a big difference with 100% kona coffee and kona coffee blend. They sell kona coffee in the supermarkets here, but if you read the label it is usually only 10% kona coffee beans from hawaii the rest is from other countries(even though is named 100% it says kona coffee BLEND). It is very hard to find 100% kona coffee beans outside of hawaii to buy is stores. So make sure when you get your kona coffee you are getting 100% kona coffee beans from hawaii.

I brought back a bunch of coffee made form beans grown in hawaii on our honeymoon. It was sooooooooooo good. Actually the store has a website you can order the coffee from.

100% Kona is not cheap: a small bag of pure 100% Kona coffe beans can be purchased at Kona Island or Kona Cafe for about $40. I regret not getting a bag before we checked out of Poly and headed home.:sad1:

100% Kona is my favorite variety of coffee and I feel it is worth the price. The Kenyan Coffee at Boma & Jiko is wonderful too......but Kona coffee reigns supreme!

Try www.royalkonacoffee.com This is one of the companies in Hawaii you can buy the coffee from, they also sell the lion brand.

Also try www.ivchawaii.com This is another brand I bought while in Hawaii.

There are a few different kona coffee beans that are produced and each one lends its own distinct flavor to the coffee.

Peaberry refers to the rare (3 to 5% of the Kona coffee crop), but natural occurrence of a single, compact bean being produced per coffee cherry, compared to the usual two. This makes a difference in the flavor of the bean -to understand and appreciate it, you will have to taste it. :yay:

You can get a 1lb whole bean bag of the peaberry for 36.00 from ivchawaii.

I personally like the extra fancy bean. It has a great buttery taste.

Check out ivchawaii. I like there site better and they have the 1lb whole bean bags.

The 100% Kona coffee at Kona Cafe is not served to go or by the individual cup. It is only served in the 24oz. press pot for dine in.....sorry for the bad news. Although, if you made an ADR every morning for Kona Cafe you could have the wonderful 100% Kona coffee and a fruit cup or a Kona Delight (seasonal melon with fruit yogurt, honey and granola $3.59) as a light breakfast.

:thumbsup2

They are 4-cup, but I think it's "mini" cups - like six ounces! Enough to fill the room mugs for two people one and a half times each. I always seem to end up making two pots in the morning.

P.S. Housekeeping will give you extra coffee packets if you ask.

I was hoping it wasn't one of those single serve machines where you slide the entire filter/coffee packet into the machine (no basket) and you can't use your own coffee. Thanks for the info!
:)

Kona Café and the Coffee bar are the only locations at the Polynesian that serve Kona coffee. Even at Kona café if you just order coffee you will get Kona blend (not 100% Kona) but if you want 100% Kona you order the press pot at Kona Café.

You can also buy ground and whole bean Kona Coffee at the Kona Café coffee bar. ‘Ohana and Captain Cook’s does not serve Kona coffee.

BTW, and not really OT, you can get good coffee at Boma and at the Swolphin Hotels. None of them use Nestle's!:lmao:

Does anyone know anything about Edy's Kona Coffee ice cream? I had this once at POFQ's ice cream counter and haven't been able to find it again. It was so good. I still find myself craving it.

We are getting ready for our first visit to the Poly, and your site has been extremely helpful. Thank you for the terrific collection of information.
