How does Japanese sound?

  • Sounds great!

  • I've never had Japanese before, but I am willing to try anything once.

  • I don't know. I've never had Japanese, and I'm not sure how I'll like it. What do you think?

  • No, thanks. Maybe something else?

  • Other (state what)

I voted other. I would never eat on a first date. Too much of a time commitment if the guy turns out to be a jerk, you're stuck. Plus you don't have to worry about food getting stuck in your teeth, something not agreeing with you, etc. What about meeting up for coffee, or drinks instead???

One other thought, grab a girlfriend and do a "trial run" lunch at the restaurant ahead of time :thumbsup2

You are probably right. Thanks for your advice. I will take that into consideration. I just never thought of it as "intimate," as a movie marathon seemed like a relatively harmless activity, one that I would do with a brother, sister, cousin, or friend. So, I would be cool for it, even if he and I decide we don't hit it off romantically. And you are missing the point of it, hehe. The fun of a Star Trek marathon is the philosophical discussion that ensues (Geek alert)

Further, I am a homebody. I would much rather spend time at home with a friend(s), partner, myself...in private than go out. It's the life of an introvert. But, it probably is something that should be reserved later on down the line, you are completely right.

Looks like that ship has sailed huh?

Something to keep in mind for the next guy, I guess.

Guess you don't have high hopes on this guy, huh?

check out yelp and the like for menu reviews. Even the tiniest mom and pop mexican place here has decent menu descriptions on yelp.

It is not a big deal. We ate at a Japanese restaurant last night. I'm not a big sushi fan, but had a California roll (NO fish in this one), beef negimaki (thinly sliced beef rolled around scallions..beef is cooked!), and tempura. All was delicious, and not a speck of raw fish entered my mouth. OTOH, my teens and my DH enjoyed the raw fish in assorted rolls.

There will be other things to have besides sushi!

FYI, California rolls usually DO have fish in them.

Correct. If you're paying less than about $16 for a CA roll, it's likely surimi, which is imitation crab meat made of "junk fish".

Annnnnnnd, many California Rolls have a thick layer of roe (tiny, orange fish eggs) on top. Hence, the reason for my post about five or six posts back about food getting stuck in your teeth! Those little suckers gravitate towards teeth, I swear!!! :lmao:

Well first, I'm excited for you and hope you have a wonderful time on your date. :) Give the guy a chance - don't expect too much on the first date.

Every Japanese restaurant I've been to has had chicken of some sort and most Japanese sauces are very tasty. I'm not an adventurous eater, either, but I love chicken teriyaki. Most ginger dressings are delicious, too.

aaaaaaand I'm getting hungry for sushi...thanks everyone! (LOVE sushi and all Japanese food)

Zen Bistro in Westchase, have you been?

If in O-Town, Dragonfly on Sandlake is phenom! My absolute favorite!

Yes, I've been to Zen Bistro a few times....but the most authentic place I've been in this area is "I ai sushi" though, on Waters in Tampa. They have excellent Sushi, Ramen, and other great dishes. :thumbsup2

If it's a strictly sushi bar, I wouldn't do it if you are picky. I happen to love sushi but know so many picky eaters who have a really hard time with the idea of it.

If it is a teppanyaki/sushi restaurant, go for it. Just don't get the sushi. Big grill where veggies, rice or noodles, and chicken, beef, pork, or shrimp all get fried up in an entertaining way on a large grill and cooked in a delicious sweet soy sauce. Most people like it, and it's fun.

Go and do not make a production out of it (in your own head or to him).

Order any simple item with plain rice (hibachi chicken or tempura, as many have recommended, would be good). Many places set the table with both US silverware and chopsticks. If it isn't there, just ask without making a fuss about it and no one will think twice.

and I do agree with the advice of a PP to hold off on a Star Trek marathon until you have been on several dates. It is too much one on one time with no clear end time, etc.

DS16 is going on a first date on Thursday evening!

Have a great time!

My first thought when I read this: You son is going on a date with mmackeymouse?!

I was like

This is OT, but my in-laws live in Oldsmar, so we're in the Tampa area a few times a year. We really like Zen Bistro (grabbed it "to go" in December) so I looked up "I ai Sushi" and that looks great too. Plus they have okonomiyaki!!! :cool1:

LOL!!! Me too! But I figure its a long shot...and mmackeymouse would have to be 16 and I have a feeling she's not! We do have a Japanese restaurant here...I need to ask him where they are going, that might thicken the plot!

I'm pretty sure this is a teen poster from reading the OP and the advice being asked for.
