Please try not to turn this into a "I won't let any celebrity tell me how to vote" thread, that's not what this is about and that's been argued a bazillion times. ;) I'm just wondering if any long term fans or DISers will get behind this?

N.Y. Candidate Seeks Springsteen Boycott
By MARC HUMBERT AP Political Writer

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Upset with Bruce Springsteen's effort to oust President Bush from the White House, the New York Conservative Party's candidate for the U.S. Senate is launching a "Boycott the Boss" television commercial.

"He thinks making millions with a song-and-dance routine allows him to tell you how to vote," Marilyn O'Grady says in the 30-second spot. "Here's my vote: Boycott the Boss. If you don't buy his politics, don't buy his music."

In a statement, O'Grady said Springsteen "has a right to say what he thinks, but we have an equal right to speak. Now that he's moved onto the political stage to bash my president, it is entirely fair to respond."

Springsteen was among more than 20 prominent musicians who announced on Aug. 4 that they would hold a series of anti-Bush fund-raising concerts under the "Vote for Change" banner in 28 cities in October.

"I feel this is one of the most critical elections in my lifetime," Springsteen told The Associated Press at the time.

Springsteen's "No Surrender" has become an anthem for Democratic Sen. John Kerry's presidential campaign.

A spokesman for O'Grady, Howard Lim, would not say how much the Long Island's ophthalmologist's campaign was spending on the commercial, in which she says, "I stand with President Bush and it's time to tame the liberal elite."

A spokeswoman for Springsteen did not immediately return a call seeking comment Monday.

O'Grady, a conservative Republican, launched her campaign after Republican Gov. George Pataki and the state GOP's leadership handed the party's Senate nomination to Howard Mills, a little-known legislator who supports abortion rights and civil unions for gays. Polls have shown Schumer running far ahead of both O'Grady and Mills.

Boycott "The Boss"?!?!?

I can see not going to this particular concert, but if you are a life long fan whose political views are different than his, will you really boycott him and his future CD's and concerts???

Oh hell no! Bruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuce! :bounce:
:bounce:

Well, this might change my opinion of Bruce. I've never been a Bruce fan, I might need to be one now.;)

Big Bruce fan, don't like what he said at all, but I like his music and live performances way too way to boycott him.

No it doesn't change the way I will vote and it doesn't change the fact that I'm a Jersey Girl and love the Boss.

I was boycotting him anyway because his voice grates on my nerves and I've never liked any of his songs. :teeth:

browneyes, I agree with you 100%. Never was a huge Bruce fan, didn't dislike his music but I didn't seek it out, either.....now I feel compelled to go out and pick up a few CDs. I wonder if the concert is going to release any of the shows on CD? Hope so, since it looks like I won't be able to get to one.

Nah, it's not that important to me.

I AM glad that Bruce is not "hiding" his intentions regarding the tour. so if I don't agree, I don't have to buy a ticket. What I DON'T like is artists blindsiding their fans with political tirades when I came for the music.

You don't like the Boss? I could debate you on that-ha!
Oh, was I supposed to say, "thanks for your opinion!:) "?

Baby We Were Born to Run! The Anthem of the 70's and
all wild lovers of that era. You're just too young Esmerelda.

nope he didnt change how I plan to vote and I still like Bruce.

Well said, DISshopkeeper. I agree completely.

I wouldn't boycott him, but he's not my favorite singer, so it just doesn't matter enough to me to make a difference.

Boycott Bruce  I'd have to leave the state ;) .

I never was a Springsteen fan, but I was a fan of Dave Matthews Band. ..and, they are participating in the concert with Bruce.

I will not financially support bands who are vocal regarding their political views if they disagree with my own. So, I would support that boycott. And, I would go out of my way to support musicians that are supporting Bush.

However, I will listen to CDs of bands if I already own the CDs. (But, when I do that, I really start feeling resentful!)

Also, I have a hard time going to the movies now because I really don't want to support actors and actresses and directors, etc., who are really actively against Bush, too. And, obviously, there are a lot of them out there!

My husband and I used to discuss separating the art from the artist prior to 9-11 and the country's divisive politics. I remember I had always heard that Hitler, for instance (and, I'm not comparing anyone to Hitler!) was a great watercolorist, but I had never seen any of his paintings in photographs. When I did, I was surprised that he was indeed talented--at least technically. So, this same conversation ensued.

I can't separate the two anymore. I can admire talent, for instance, but I don't want to financially contribute--even with concert or cd or movie ticket sales-- to vastly differing political goals.

I don't understand how people can get so worked up over other people's politcal beliefs. My dad wouldn't go into a restaurant the other day because they had a John Kerry sign up. I'm not a fan of the current President (my dad doesn't know that:teeth: ), but having a Bush sign posted wouldn't prevent me from patronizing a store or restaurant. Same thing goes for a celebrity and purchasing their music or seeing their movies.

This is very interesting. I'm just wondering if you check on the political views of the makers of every product or service you buy?

No, I wouldn't boycott an artist simply because of his political views....no matter what they were.

I think it's a sad commentary when someone wants to try and ruin a person's career simply because they disagree with their political views.

Anyone should have the right to express their opinions in whatever way they choose without fear of reprisal.

Just a wild guess, but I'm gonna say that most people who would boycott The Boss over this aren't exactly big fans in the first place.

Just to be perfectly clear, I do have a problem with entertainers using time that I paid for to spout political views. But that's not what Bruce is doing. It's a political concert tour. Anyone buying tickets knows politics is a part of it. More power to him.

Not that I'm likely to go to any concert in the near future, but I certainly wouldn't boycott over this.

No, I will not boycott Bruce or his music. In fact, if I get the opportunity, I will attend the concert in Orlando just for the music.
