Put the fork down.
For me putting the fork down is step one. Step two is picking up the salt. Once the fork goes down I pickup the salt shaker and put a nice coating of the white stuff on everything left on my plate. This way I am not tempted to pickup the fork again if they don't pickup the plate for a few minutes. Sounds silly, looks silly, but it works for me.
