Please say a prayer....dog medication warning

Please say a prayer for our dog. He is fighting for his life thanks to Previcox, a pain medication prescribed to him for arthritis. I did my homework for the medicine I didn't want him to have but went with what the vet said instead. Supposedly he is in the 1% to have every single adverse effect such as painful mouth ulcers, projectile vomiting and bloody diarrhea. He is in kidney failure. This dog truly is my best friend. I was never a dog hater but I wasn't a dog lover until he literally wandered into my life, a stray that no one wanted or claimed, possibly a drop off on the country road where we live. We have had him for 8 years. They estimated his age at 9 and he was having a little trouble with arthritis in his hips, otherwise was healthy, just having bloodwork last week which all came out great. Now, if he makes it (please God let him make it) he will not have full kidney function and will need a special diet along with medicine and frequent vet trips to check blood.
If you look up problems with previcox or previcox killed my dog you will see websites, one with 9 pages or dogs extremely ill or dying from this medicine. The problem is that for example with my dog, he took the medicine for 7 days before he had these reactions so the kidney damage was already done. I am sure some dogs do fine on this but you won't know till it's almost too late or too late if it is toxic for your particular dog. I was trying to help my dog but instead I was slowly poisoning him and it's very hard to deal with. He will be at the vets for at least 4 days trying to flush his kidneys and then have more bloodwork and go from there. I'm beside myself!

((((hugs)))). Prayers coming your way. I can relate to this, I know what you are going through. We went through the exact same thing with Deramaxx. If you look that one up you will find the same thing. We adopted out cocker spaniel when he was about 5 years old and he was 14 when the arthritis got bad. We went our vets advice and put him on Deramaxx. He was nearly pain free and going up and down the stairs. He started using the Deramaxx in April and by last August kidney failure. He was so sick it was heartbreaking. On top of going through this with our beloved boy, we felt so guilty. I had reservations about the Deramaxx but trusted our vet. I am sending prayers

I am so sorry. Don't beat yourself up. You were trying to ease his pain, which is something many dog owners wouldn't even bother with in the first place. Being a pet owner is tough sometimes.

It is very easy to blame yourself but you must try not to do this. You trusted the person with years of training to advise you what would be best, and you did what you believed was best for your dog. Hugs and prayers are with you. Please keep us updated.

Hugs and prayers. We had a scare with our lab a few years ago--she managed to get an unopened pack of sugar-free gum off of the kitchen counter. By the time I found her, she had chewed up about half of the pack. Took her to the vet, and she had elevated levels of whatever it is that reveals liver damage . . . We did catch it in time, though, and today she is fine -- hoping the same for yuo and your pup.

So, so sorry! A few years ago I took my shih tzu in to be spayed and told the vet that I had lost a cocker spaniel two years before when a vet had used ketamine for her anethesia. He made the comment that most dogs do fine with ketamine, and my cocker was just one of the few who did not. I said, still I would rather you just not use ketamine. He said there were other anethesia meds available and I took that to mean he would use one of those other meds. I got a call that afternoon, that my shih tzu was OK, but they'd had a problem waking her up and she'd had a seizure and they were going to keep her overnight. I asked what anesthesia they'd used and was told ketamine. I was furious, since I had specifically mentioned that I'd rather they not use ketamine, since I'd already lost one dog who'd received it. I went to the vet's office early the next morning, gave them a piece of my mind, and informed them I was changing vets. My shih tzu was OK, but I still get chills thinking about how I could have lost another dog because of ketamine. As it is I had two small dogs, who both had a bad reaction to it.

Sending prayers for you dog! I went through this with my 7 year old Boxer in December of 2000, except the medication was Sulfa Trim (more commonly known as Bactrim). I am so sorry you are dealing with this. He had an enlarged prostate and needed to be neutered. The vet gave him this medication as a precaution until they could get him in for surgery. I will now no longer use sulfa based drugs for my dogs or my kids. My pediatrician prescribed Bactrim for my son when he was little and when I filled it, they filled the generic - Sulfa Trim. I was shaking when they gave me the prescription. I could not give that to my son after what my boxer went through. I now list it as an allergy for my kids. I have actually had one nurse get an attitude with me when she asked what there reaction was to the medication and I explained the reason we don't use it. I know everyone is different but there is no way we will use that medication again. I also found out that it was a very rare but very serious known reaction to that medication. I hope your dog pulls through!

All medications have possible side effects. Sadly, it seems like your poor pup had a full blown reaction. There is no way to predict who will have issues and who will be just fine. So, there was no way for you to know.
