Which IPOD model do you suggest getting? What are the major difference? How many GB are generally sufficient? Shuffle, Mini, Nano, Regular? Is the Mini even still available? I couldn't find it on the Apple site? Are there any deals offered on these?

I know this has been asked many times before, but I really want good opinions on this since it is so much $$$. Thanks so much!

I just bought a nano. I am still in the technological dark ages, so I can't be of much help. But I talked to a salesperson today who said that the minis are being phased out, to be replaced competely by the nanos. He only had 5 left, and only one of the larger ones. The nano is amazingly small, the screen looks clear and is in color, and the sound is wonderful. I got the larger one that holds up to 1000 songs (it was $249). The smaller one which holds up to 500 songs was $199.

Good luck.

I've still seen Minis at the refurb/RMA table at my Apple store. My BJ's still has minis as well (I think its only blue or silver).

I personally wouldn't bother with a shuffle for an adult. I may consider a shuffle for my son just to see if he can handle a "bigger" one down the line. I really like having a screen and full color on mine. I had downloaded album art on my Ipod so I can find the album image while the song is playing.

They don't make my model (30 G photo) anymore. I have never had problem with service or questions even though it is discontinued. My 30 G holds a ton of songs. I only have about 3000 on it now, but can fit many more. If I had decided on a mini, all that wouldn't fit.

There are mini's on the website that are refurbished and under the sale:

http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APP...Hdu/0.0.15.1.0.8.63.0.0.0.0.0.0.3.1.1.0?94,37

I personally have the 3rd Generation touch wheel and a 4th Generation click wheel. The newest has 20 GB which means it holds I think near 10,000 songs. I have about 1200 songs on it I believe. That takes a little less than 4 GB and is plenty for me. Also with the iPods you can change the formats of the music to take more or less space but that effects the sound quality. if you have an apple store near you I'd suggest going and trying them out, and messing with them.

If you are a student or faculty you can get a discount at the education store at the Apple website. Just go to the store and pick "education" on the right side.

We love, love, love the iPod! (Also XM satellite radio) - I wonder how we ever got along without one. It is one of the greatest inventions EVER!
We are going to get either a shuffle or a Nano for DD for Christmas. DH would love the big dog 60 gig with the ipicture on it, but we'll have to see how the budget is. Lol!

The differences are this - the newer ipod models are in color (the screen) - the nano, as well. I think I remember reading that the nano holds about 1000 songs, which is plenty for me.
Also the mini - the one being phased out is available in colors (the outside case of the device). DD really prefers that it be in color, so DH is leaing more towards trying to find one of those before they are all gone.

If you buy any of them from Apple directly you can get a student discount of 10% off I think. And from what a friend told me, as long the school has a record of you attending they accept it. Mine was never checked up on as far as I know and I got the discount.
Have a mini and love it.

I'm just trying to understand all of this iPod/MP3 stuff. Do you have to sign up for a membership to a music website in order to get music, or do you pay for individual songs? Can someone elaborate a little on how to get the music? (I know you can put music from your own CDs on it, too, but my ds doesn't have any CD's yet). :confused3

Fortunately our son has the same musical taste as ours, so we wound up burning our purchased CD's into Itunes. Itunes then categorized them and d/l onto our Ipods.

We did have a few promo codes here and there and used those for some song purchases on the Apple sites.

Some have used a peer to peer site and gotten music that way. Some have also found inexpensive pay sites and gotten music that way as well.

Some of the music sites where you pay a monthly fee are NOT compatible with Apple/Ipod. I haven't checked lately, but that seemed to be a waste of money for me.

You can get your music form iTunes. It is free to set up an account. Song downloads are .99 each. You can buy prepaid cards at places like Best Buy and Target. Then all you do is enter the code from the card on iTunes and your accountis then credited that amount. (this is how I do it)

I think you can also just charge your credit card.

Then, the next time you plug your iPod into your computer, your new songs will automatically download onto your iPod (depending on what settings you have chosen)

Thanks for the great info..........I just ordered the nano through igive.com so my charity would get a percentage, I have had the mini since the beginning of the year and absolutely love it, but since I work out every morning was interested in the smaller size of the nano. I can hardly wait to get it. Ordering it through igive.com I went to the apple store from there, it gave me free shipping and free engraving. I too ordered the larger one for $249.00 plus tax.

I want a nano but since I already have 7gig filled on my 30gig and I'm not even close to being finished loading cd's I'll have to wait.

I told DH I'd get him one for xmas but he said he'd rather have something else.

Can you use the Nano's with any of the existing docking stations? Both the full size and the mini fit on the one I have but I can't see how the nano would.

I know nothing about them...but wanted to say that my DH's company makes the microchip for the nano.....it is amazing.

If you think you may have more than 1000 songs the Nano won't work for you. I have almost 1000 on my mini (6GB) and it isn't Christmas time yet! There are 1140 on itunes, but some of those are dad's and DD#1's that I don't want to hear myself. They are a lot easier than I thought! If I get another one and the Nano doesn't increase its capacity I'll get a regular one.

So can you delete songs if you get tired of them or don't like them anymore?

Yes you can--you can delete them completely off Itunes, or you can just uncheck them so they are on your computer but not on your Ipod. I plan on having a massive Christmas category and then removing it after the holidays.

See this is what we do.

We have two Ipods and one Itunes list on one computer.

One Ipod (mine) is set in configuration to synchronize with checked boxes only. Unchecked songs are not set to configure.

The other Ipod (DH"s) is set to synchronize all songs.

Since I check off the songs on the Ipod lists that I don't like, they are not in the actual Ipod.

You can only delete them on Itunes, not off the device itself.

I hope that helps!

I have a 15 gig iPod AND a shuffle. The shuffle is amazing for the gym. It is so small and lightweight that you hardly notice it is there. Definitely can't say that with my iPod.

I really like my screen/album art and knowing the artist name and song. Since I don't have all 4,000 songs memorized, the obscure ones trip me up all the time. It would bug me not being able to know which album that track was from and such like that.

Some don't mind that. I find the shuffle too small for me. (plus no screen color) I don't find my 30 G photo too big or bulky when I work out/walk.

I planned on getting my two teens Nano's for Christmas and then decided not to because of all the stuff I read about the screen scratching at the drop of a hat, to the point where you couldn't even see it. Has anyone had this problem with the Nano? My teens will be rough on these devices I'm sure. :confused3

I too, thought of a Nano for DH. I wasn't too crazy about how they were made, and it just made me nervous.

I have seen a few of my students with them (like maybe 2 nanos so far) and they do look fairly fragile.
