I'm doing a research project on NCLB. Please take the time to answer a few questions. Parents, non-parents, and extreme political views are all welcome. :)

No Child Left Behind Survey

1. What, if any, positive impact has NCLB had on your child's education?

2. Would you endorse a candidate based on his stance on NCLB?

3. If your child attended a school that was deemed "failing", would you have them moved?

4. Would you consider the testing requirements of NCLB to be excessive?

5. Do you think all students should be held to the same academic standards?

1. What, if any, positive impact has NCLB had on your child's education? New school so not sure

2. Would you endorse a candidate based on his stance on NCLB? no

3. If your child attended a school that was deemed "failing", would you have them moved?
not neccesarily

4. Would you consider the testing requirements of NCLB to be excessive? not sure yet

5. Do you think all students should be held to the same academic standards? NO because not everyone is the same (not talking skin color either)

1. What, if any, positive impact has NCLB had on your child's education?
none

2. Would you endorse a candidate based on his stance on NCLB?

no

3. If your child attended a school that was deemed "failing", would you have them moved?

no

4. Would you consider the testing requirements of NCLB to be excessive?

yes
5. Do you think all students should be held to the same academic standards?
no

1. What, if any, positive impact has NCLB had on your child's education?
The impact has been negative. High Stakes testing IMO is not the only way to see that a school is doing it's job.

2. Would you endorse a candidate based on his stance on NCLB?

Yes. As a teacher I see the misguided impact of this legislation and the harm it is really doing to those students it is supposed to help. This is one of many issuse I have teken into consideration as I prepare to vote.

3. If your child attended a school that was deemed "failing", would you have them moved?

No. Data is only that, numbers on a paper. I have seen classes not reach benchmarks by one or two students. So because a couple of students aren't proficent the whole school is failing? Many times these students fail by only a few points. Again pencil paper testing can only measure one type of learning.

4. Would you consider the testing requirements of NCLB to be excessive?

Yes for the above reasons.

5. Do you think all students should be held to the same academic standards?
No. Students learn in different ways and high stakes testing doesn't make allowances for those learning styles. Also not all students are capable of meeting these requirements.

Not a teacher but agree completely with everything you said.

1. What, if any, positive impact has NCLB had on your child's education? NONE, In fact I believe it has had a negative impact.

2. Would you endorse a candidate based on his stance on NCLB? No

3. If your child attended a school that was deemed "failing", would you have them moved? Not necessarily

4. Would you consider the testing requirements of NCLB to be excessive? Yes

5. Do you think all students should be held to the same academic standards? No

2. Would you endorse a candidate based on his stance on NCLB? Yes. I think it should be repealed--so I'd vote for someone who agrees.

3. If your child attended a school that was deemed "failing", would you have them moved? I'd need to know why the school is deemed failing. Only because one subgroup is failing?--Probably not then.

4. Would you consider the testing requirements of NCLB to be excessive? Testing no, ways of reporting-yes.

5. Do you think all students should be held to the same academic standards? Yes, but not all on the same time period. (Especially with so little $$ to back it).

1. What, if any, positive impact has NCLB had on your child's education? none---just adds MORE paperwork for the teachers

2. Would you endorse a candidate based on his stance on NCLB?no

3. If your child attended a school that was deemed "failing", would you have them moved?no and I didn't---it was a new school for him and it has turned out to be one of the best choices I have ever made!

4. Would you consider the testing requirements of NCLB to be excessive?yes

5. Do you think all students should be held to the same academic standards?I agree with bobcat---not all students learn the same way. If teachers could just teach for the love of teaching instead of teaching for some dumb test---- our schools would be so much better!

1. What, if any, positive impact has NCLB had on your child's education?

It seems to have a negative impact.

2. Would you endorse a candidate based on his stance on NCLB?
Yes.

3. If your child attended a school that was deemed "failing", would you have them moved?
No. In fact my 4th grader currently attends a "failing school". Why is the school failing? Because one subgroup- 3rd grade special education students- failed to make adequately yearly progress in one subject area- math. Do I think that my son is receiving an inadequate education? Absolutely not. There is the option for parents to move their children to another school in the district. Of 500+ students, I believe 3 or 4 have requested a change of schools.

4. Would you consider the testing requirements of NCLB to be excessive?
Yes.

5. Do you think all students should be held to the same academic standards?
No. Children are not all the same. They learn in different ways. Some children cannot be expected to make the same progress as their peers. I think we need to look at the progress each student makes individually. That is a better measure of progress than one standardized test given on one particular day.

1. What, if any, positive impact has NCLB had on your child's education? None. It took my children out of private school since my DD could not be bussed to receive the help she needs from a private school. NCLB means that it doesn't leave behind as long as you follow the district's silly @$$ rules.

2. Would you endorse a candidate based on his stance on NCLB?
Not the most important issue that should be considered, IMHO.

3. If your child attended a school that was deemed "failing", would you have them moved? In our district, they were told that they need to make progress in their test scores. That means that the teachers are not teaching to educate the children, but to make them test better. Would I move? No. My DD needs the extra programs that only the public system can offer her at this point. As soon as she shows progress, she's transferring back to private.

4. Would you consider the testing requirements of NCLB to be excessive? Yes. They are not testing on applied knowledge but on memorization and repetition of practicing to take the tests.

5. Do you think all students should be held to the same academic standards? If they were, then we'd either have a society of all professional people with doctoral degrees or we'd have a society of unskilled labor. The world needs a mix of every type of people in order to make things work well. No. Not every child should be held to the same academic standard. Even in families where the parents hold all of their children to the same standards, they can produce some that can lead and others that can follow. The world doesn't just need "chiefs."

1. What, if any, positive impact has NCLB had on your child's education? None it probably has had a negative effect.

2. Would you endorse a candidate based on his stance on NCLB?
If they endorsed repealing it I would be more receptive to listening to the rest of their agenda.

3. If your child attended a school that was deemed "failing", would you have them moved? No, I would have to know a lot more than their NCLB rating to do something so drastic.

4. Would you consider the testing requirements of NCLB to be excessive? Yes, absolutely.

5. Do you think all students should be held to the same academic standards? No. What matters is are they doing the best work that they are capable of. Everyone is not capable of the same level.

1. None, on my children. However, in my childrens classroom tends to have more inclusion students in the classroom, and more highly qualified educational assistants to assist these students.

2. Not particulary. I am not a fan of the NCLB.

3. Fortunately I am not in this position. As I have an education background, this would be a situation where I would consider homeschooling.

4. Yes, to some extent. I feel that the emphasis on testing tends to get excessive. The special education students that I assist can NOT complete the assessments, and honestly, its a challenge to even get them to understand fundamental concepts. Using those parameters, these special education students can not do this assessment within accepted parameters.

5. ) See above 4. No, some special education students can not complete even the basic assignements.
