I plate everything at the stove. Its just a heck of a lot easier for me to line the plates up on the counter and dole everything out at once. I line up the plates, the kids line up and take their plate to the table, and when they are finished they return their plates/silverware to the sink, etc. I seldom use "serving" platters for normal every-night dinner....why even go through the trouble and mess ? All I see are more dirty dishes, I already have the pots/pans to clean, why create more work ? Now holidays, special occasions, invited dinner guests are different. To me, that warrants the work of extra dishes.
I do it because to me it looks nicer than a few pots on the table. Same reason I won't use paper plates and plastic forks at dinner.
Honestly it's probably at most 2 minutes more of work. I put the serving stuff in the dishwasher.
I'm also the type who has to make her bed every day within minutes of getting up. Even if I'm not in my bedroom the rest of the day, knowing it looks nice and tidy and inviting makes me happy. LOL
