Plate your food at the stove or use platters on table?

Depends
At stove
Buffet style on counter
On table
Maybe a combo

Most frequently, at the stove

We plate at the stove- helps with portion control and cuts down on dishes.
For company/holidays, we set up a buffet on the counter. We usually have too many people to fit plates and serving platters on our table!

When my family lived at home and even until my husband died, I served in bowls at the table. Now that it is just me, I just serve myself at the stove.

At the table, everyone served themselves. I served a salad, green vegetable, yellow vegetable, starch and meat at every dinner. If a child didn't want green beans one day, they didn't take any. I never forced a child to eat anything that was served, but I never cooked something because a child didn't want to eat what I served......and no between meal snacks. (Except for an after-school snack.)

We went through an allergy period and that was when I had to make two green and two yellow vegetables.....but we had them for two days running and they were eaten by those who could.

Now I just cook what I am in the mood for...no more elaborate meals!

It depends. I usually plate at the stove. But when were having something like tacos where all the kids like different toppings. I'll put everything in bowls on the table so they can all serve themselves.

I plate by the stove. Less dishes that way. Only the salad goes in a bowl and put on the table.

The only time I make is an exception is if we have company or it's a holiday. Then I'll put the food on the table because I'm usually cooking more of it.

Pots and pans food was cooked in goes on the table.

If I am not using serving dishes this is the only other way I would do it. I don't have any 5 year old kids here, we are all old enough to decide what we want on our plates ad how much of each thing we want! I can't imagine plating another adults (or even my teens!!) food and handing it to them in my house.

Since we moved into this house in 2007, we plate at the stove. The house is boxy and segmented (split plan built in 1973) where our last couple houses were open plan (new houses). It's easier for all 5 of us to make our own plate and go sit to eat...and sadly we don't usually all sit together. But, before 2007 I'd set the table family style and we'd all eat together (but the table was in the kitchen which was open to TV room). I miss the old way...really hate this house.

I always put a few things on the table - always raw cut up veggies (one of my DDs only eats raw vegetables) and salad, and usually rolls if we are having them. They other things (meat, starch, hot veggie) I usually leave on the stove and we all plate our own serving. If it is a casserole, I will usually put that right on the table. So I guess I am a combination of both. I don't like to wash extra dishes! I almost always put all food on the table if we have guests, or sometimes serve buffet style from the island. But never from the stove with guests.

A bit of both depending on what it is. When we host holidays I have it set up buffet style. Usually I only plate biscuits/rolls. But things like shrimp boil all go in a bowl and everyone just gets what they want.

My mother always served in bowls and platters. I just look at it as more dishes to wash.

I plate everyone's meals here. It is a bit hard for my dad to walk and hold a plate now that he has to use a cane. So I just tell him to sit down. Then I plate DD4's dinner and DH will handle the cutting of her food. DS is carrying Dad's plate and getting forks/knives/spoons so I plate his and DH's and then mine. Down to a science!

I plate DH's food quite often. It's just the two of us so I serve from the stove. Many times he is working in his office at lunch or even at dinner time, so I just bring his plate to him at his desk. If he's finished work for the day he will plate his own.

When the kids were at home I generally put the food on the table in the pots and pans it was cooked in. No need to dirty bowls/platters for just us.

And it even depends on the "company" we have for a meal. Family or close friends, we plate from the stove. A "sit down" dinner with someone we're not super close to, I will put the food in bowls/platters on the table.

Sometimes we do buffet style from the counter, if we have a bunch of people over. Or for something like tacos, everything is in small bowls on the counter.

I don't want the extra serving dishes so for just normal daily meals we plate at the stove but everyone plates their own. I quit plating my kids once they were big enough to serve themselves (maybe 8 or 9.) My youngest is 17 so I can't remember that far back.

We're casual people so even if we have others over the most I do is a buffet line with serving pieces.

We always eat at the table. Everything is tabled, sometimes in the pot it was cooked in and other times in a dish, often a combination of the two.

I haven't fixed a plate for anyone in my family since they were very small, I don't dictate what they eat.

What do you do for dinner meals? Do you plate each person's meal by the stove or put the food on platters on the table?

I usually plate the food by the stove except if we are having company then we put food either buffet style in the kitchen or platters on the table. It's just the 4 of us and helps with portion control and I can try and have leftovers too. My MIL puts each item on a platter or in a bowl.

Seldom do we plate our meals from the stove. Even with just DH & I , we enjoy a nicely set table. It just seems like more of a meal to us and we have always done it that way when our children were home and have continued it since they are gone.

Doesn't seem any harder to me, and the dishwasher does the work for any extra bowls/platters! ;)

Most of the time we serve ourselves from the stove, but I put condiments (hot sauce, Parmesan cheese for spaghetti, etc.) out on the table.

My in-laws serve everything at the table, and it drives me nuts. Sometimes there are so many dishes that I feel claustrophobic!

I do the same as you. Plate when it's only the 3 of us and do buffet style when it's more than just us. I'm not one to create more work for myself when not necessary. Everyone is welcome to get more when I plate it. I pretty much know what and how much dh and dd will eat though. I don't do it for control at all but just to keep things clean and save me work.

We also plate from the stove or counter. Actually, whatever meat & veggie I make will be on the stove and since I make my mashed potatoes in the kitchen aid mixer, I serve them from that. If anyone wants seconds, the just get up, go to the stove and get some more.

I will plate other's plates ONCE IN A WHILE. It's only when I'm already standing at the stove with serving spoon in hand. They'll come up to the stove with their plate (fully ready to serve themselves, mind you) and I might just take their plate and give them a scoop or two, whatever they want. But normally, I'll grab my plate, get my food and sit. Then they'll follow suit.

And just like others, I will serve from platters/bowls/etc on the table for company or a holiday.

We eat at the table every night. Food is moved to the table for serving either in the pot/pan it was cooked in or by serving dish or a combo of both. The only time we dish out is for lunches on the weekend when we make mac & cheese or something like that for the kids.

My mother and grandmother both set the table and had serving dishes/pots/pans on the table and we do that with our family. If I didn't work, we'd have a lovely set table with serving dishes and platters every night. I have a small obsession with vintage Pyrex and Corelleware and any chance I have to use my pieces, I do!

It really depends on what is being served and who is there. With proper company we will lay everything out nicely buffet style in the dining room. If it's just us or a close friend eating over we help ourselves to the hot food in the kitchen. A bowl of salad will often go out to the table with some dressings. If it's an "eat in front of the TV" kind of night, nothing will go out to the table.
